Interesting flash back in time to 1991 Geneva Motor Show where there were some surprises and world launch of the W140 S-Class as well as also shown was E36 BMW 3-Series and Porsche Panamericana (modified version of 911)

The W140 S-Class was the late Dr. Werner Niefers' (Mercedes-Benz AG CEO at the time) own private ego-schmooze. At the time of its' presentation, it was subjected to widespread criticism in its' home market. An ungainly "gargantuan" with the charm of a slab-sided bank vault. The later facelift helped diminish its' visual mass and led to an increasing acceptance.

Ah, the '91 Citroen ZX, quite a nice car for that era. My uncle had one, I've got many many nice memories as a kid in that car.

And then the E36. An old friend had a 320i when I was an undergraduate student. He fitted the LSD from the 318is and that's how I learned to drift. A skill that I haven't used for ages!

Nice! Thanks Rolf!

:)

Technology available in cars today were just a dream or not even thought of 26 years ago. The W140 is an engineering tour de force but it's so simple with its electrical gadgets compared to even small cars of today

In 1991 I still remember the major change in engine technology for mostly all car makers was the shift to 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC and advanced engine management systems with catalyst converters. The M120 V12 at the time was a powerhouse marvel producing an incredible 108hp more than the BMW and Jaguar 2 valve per cylinder V12 engines

Ah, the W140. Indeed big and heavy, but at that time one of the best cars available with an unmatched coach/exterior quality. If you ask me, better than today's W222.
That lovely Bentley Continental was my dreamcar in those days. I knew a BRG/daddle interior one standing in Antwerp (Belgium). Drooled many times over it ;).

All I'm thinking is ...thank god that's all in the past. Today's cars are much more interesting.

It must be a collectors item now; most of them have rusted and fallen apart ;)

That Mercedes W140 is still impressive after all these years.

Yes I remember when that Mercedes and Bentley were new. The Continental R slightly upstaged the S class that year at Geneva. However, as time goes on, the greatness of that Mercedes only seems more apparent. The Bentley was technically a Coupé version of the aging Bentley Turbo R - a fine car but a technical dinosaur, especially compared to that wonderful S class.

There is much more of a variety of cars nowadays compared to that period, maybe too much choice. Nowadays mechanically the cars are less interesting as everything is going Turbo and downsizing whereas in 1991 there was even more of a choice of engines with interesting development in 4-cylinder large capacity engines (the launch of the excellent 2,0ltr 16 valve Opel Kadett 16V comes to mind) and large engines (600SEL V12, Lambo Diablo V12, Cizeta Moroder V16)
