This is our first spy video showing the next generation compact SUV from Hyundai. A replacement for the ix35 and Tucson is planned to arrive in early 2016 and could mark a huge improvement in design for the Korean car company.

Korea, not Hollywood, is the plastic surgery capital of the world. They can turn anybody into a French actress or a Norwegian stud. Not surprisingly, their car redesigns are equally as impressive. For the ix35, squinting eyes and a butch grille will mean masculine looks that appeal to both soccer moms and weekend getaway dads.

We could be looking at an all-LED headlight arrangement here. There are at least two very small beams in the main lights and no fog lights, which is uncommon for a high-spec car unless the headlights can do an extra job.

Even if it's an option, all-LED lights on a normal compact SUV is pretty much a class first. However, Volkswagen and SEAT will also launch new models to compete in this segment, and based on the Golf/Leon, we can safely say they will also have LEDs.

Compact SUV represent on of the biggest and most highly competitive markets in the world. Fortunately for Hyundai, their next-generation ix35/Tucson is backed by strong reputation. Not a lot is known about their next-gen cars, but Hyundai have been secretly working on some new engines over the past year.

Downsizing Is a Possibility

One of them is a small 1.2-liter turbo petrol that can do the job of a 1.6-liter for the European market cars with front-wheel drive. Nissan also offers such an engine on its Qashqai crossover, which can be considered a rival. Diesel options should continue to include updated 1.7 and a 2.2-liter engines that meet the latest Euro 6 emissions standard.

In America, the 2.0-liter GDI DOHC is likely to carry over with the same 6-speed automatic. The 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder will get a slight increase in output from 182 hp to 185 hp, together with a few mpgs being added. Rumors coming from Hyundai USA say we should expect a Sport Turbo model, but we can't tell you if it's the 204 hp 1.6-liter or the 2-liter Theta II making 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft.

2016 Hyundai Tucson first official images published
On sale in the second half of the year

Hyundai has released the first official images with the 2016 Tucson set to go on sale in the second half of the year.

The crossover adopts many styling cues from its bigger brother Santa Fe and looks more refined than the model it’s set to replace thanks to a more sculpted body, chrome hexagonal front grille and sleek headlights featuring a high-tech look and benefiting from LED technology just like the daytime running lights.

The interior cabin is also an improvement compared to the previous model as it now looks more premium thanks to upscale soft touch materials and a large touchscreen display. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is packed with buttons on both sides and comes with a chrome trim also noticeable on the door handles. It boasts heated & ventilated front seats and a power tailgate which provides access to a generous 513-liter cargo capacity with the seats up.

In terms of engines, Hyundai will offer the Euro-spec Tucson with a 1.6-liter GDI naturally aspirated motor rated at 135 HP (99 kW) working with a six-speed manual gearbox. There's also a beefier turbocharged version of the engine with 176 HP (129 kW) and this one can be optionally had with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. On the diesel side, Hyundai is providing a 1.7-liter with 115 HP (85 kW) teamed up with a six-speed manual along with a 2.0-liter that can be had with 136 HP (100 KW) or 184 HP (135 kW), with both versions working with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto.

As far as safety and assistance systems are concerned, the all-new Hyundai Tucson comes with Smart Parking Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist System, Rear Traffic Cross Alert, Blind Spot Detection, Speed Limit Information Function and Active Bonnet System which will automatically raise the hood to cushion the impact shock in case of a frontal collision.

Following its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the Euro-spec Tucson will go on sale in the second half of the year.

New Hyundai Tucson spotted in the flesh for the first time
Pretty face
The recently unveiled Hyundai Tucson has been caught on camera on a parking lot in South Korea.

Judging by the beige leather interior and the automatic transmission, seen here probably is a top-spec version of the model. The photographed vehicle has also been equipped with 5-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels and plenty of matte chrome finished body details.

The 2016 Tucson comes with a lot of nice features such as the heated and cooled front seats, the power tailgate, the LED headlights with LED daytime running lights and the large touchscreen display. Power is provided by a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with 135 HP (99 kW), a turbo version of the same motor with 176 HP (129 kW), a 1.7-liter CRDi turbodiesel with 115 HP (85 kW) and a 2.0-liter diesel with 136 HP (100 kW) or 184 HP (135 kW).

Great job. It has a more mature look that competes well with the Tiguan, and manages to easily undercut the price. Should do very well.

One of the most attractive SUV around, even better than the Germans big three. The interior is obviously built to a price but the layout and overall design looks best in class.

If one takes a consumer-centric view on the matter - as opposed to a pure petrolhead perspective - Hyundai-KIA really do pose a significant threat to the established car makers of today. Not only is this new generation of Korean cars better looking than before but they also appear to have better perceived quality than previously seen. Engines and transmissions may lag behind somewhat but to the general consumer the nuances (the driving experience) will be largely overlooked - or even disregarded entirely - in favour of the total value proposition.

It looks a lot like a scaled down Santa Fe, which isn't a bad think, the Santa Fe is better looking IMO than X3 and GLK, it's pretty close to the Q5 and Disco Sport in curb appeal, just a shame about the diesel engine, it's a thirsty beast.

Yes, why do you seem to be surprised?

To each his own I guess ;)
I'll take an X3 (pretty old), Q5 (even older) or the new GLC over this without even thinking.
The exterior looks sort of ok, but I can't even imagine wanting to sit in that interior. I also fail to see European design anywhere, this car screams Asian to me.

I have to agree. No doubt these Korean brands have become some serious car makers. At least now you don´t feel sorry for the ones who drive one, as the design has been improved. But it looks so Asian to me.

I have yet to drive one, but my father drove the current ix35 a few day across Mallorca. He said he would take any French car before this. It was terrible to drive.

The X3 is nice overall, I just don't like those headlights, the Q5 looks a bit dull. The GLC hasn't bee revealed yet so I can't judge.

I understand why you say this car screams Asian, I guess what we see here is Asian car brand's interpretation of European styling.

2016 Hyundai Tucson US price tag revealed, SUV starts at $22,700

Hyundai announced pricing details for their 2016 Hyundai Tucson SUV or compact crossover if you'd like, and all the details you need to know are available below.
The 2016 Tucson will be available in four distinct trim levels, each one offering a "compelling value proposition, offering a Tucson for different buyer preferences."

We'll see about that right now. For starters, the grades are SE, Eco, Sport and Limited. Hyundai doesn't go into specifics regarding what kind of gizmos will each version bring, but the press release describes what the equipment levels will offer in a nutshell.

Therefore, the SE trim will include "popular options", whereas the Eco grade will top that with an affordable turbo model for more power and improved fuel economy.

The Sport variant stands for sporty cues and driving dynamics. It will be based on a 1.6-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine mated to a 7-speed EcoShift dual clutch and clients will have the option of selecting AWD or FWD for their desired model.

Last but not least, the Limited grade is described as a "luxury model" with leather, advanced technology and "other premium features".

SE models come only with a six-speed auto gearbox but keep in mind that the most expensive 2016 Hyundai Tucson will remove $31,300 out of your bank accounts, without the $895 freight charges.

"Tucson SE has a MSRP advantage and averages $700 in additional content compared to its competitors in the class. As Tucson competes in one of the fastest growing and most competitive segments in the industry, we can’t wait for the 2016 Tucson to make its way to dealers in just a few short weeks,” said Scott Margason, director of product planning at Hyundai Motor America.

Can't really argue with that, not that I will ever be a fan-per se but in the our local market (SA) they are not the "in favour of the total value proposition" anymore. They moved upmarket and our dying Rand is hitting both KIA and Hyundai hard for I know both local dealer principles personally very well and they have 3 and more branches around the province...they suffer really struggling! Whereas the local MB, VW and Toyota dealers are up on last year in volumes.
