I am a MINI fan, I love them, but I can't help but think BMW are screwing up a brand which I have had a lot of pleasure from owning. I experienced the Countryman for 3 years, the first 6 months I enjoyed but then it soured over time, especially when I think what the CM should have been rather than what it was.
I think the R50 was the highpoint of the BMW MINI, it was perfectly proportioned, it looked fresh and bold, it's still a great looking car today. The R56 was a little bit over blown, but still a well proportioned car, especially the Clubman, ok it didn't work in RHD markets, but it was a great car. The Speedster and Coupe were naff and completely wrong for the brand, the fact that they weren't very popular bears this out. The less said about the R56 the better, I'm sure it will be a very popular car, the masses will flock to them because of the brand, but it's really a clownish looking car, they just look stupid from most angles, especially the 5 door, that's just nuts.
For those saying the Mazda 2 isn't in the same market as the MINI, think again, MINI's aren't all sold as Coopers, there are also the Ones which are budget cars.
I don't think I'm that critical of the BMW Group, Rolls Royce can do no wrong, everything they make is stunning. BMW itself has lost it's way, it's now a mass market brand, it's products just don't have the zing that they used to have, there is no E30 M3, there is no 3.0 CSi, there is no M635, there is no E39, nothing that BMW makes today grabs me like those cars do. Even the F30 isn't as much fun to drive as the E90's were. Which makes me think most 3 series owners wouldn't notice if the 3 went FWD, which I'm sure it will probably the gen after the next.
