Aston Martin Seeks Technical Partner, Mercedes Remains Open: Report

In the same week Aston Martin turned 100, news that the historic British automaker is seeking a technical partner has emerged.

While Aston Martin has been rumored to be in talks with several firms over technology sharing for years, one of its key investors has now confirmed it.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Andrea Bonomi, the chairman of Investindustrial, which recently purchased 37.5 percent of Aston Martin and has close links to AMG, said talks were taking place between the automaker and a number of firms, one of which was Mercedes-Benz's parent company, Daimler.

Bonomi went on to reveal that an agreement could be made within the next two months, and that Investindustrial was willing to commit up to 10 years in turning around Aston Martin’s fortunes.

Aston Martin itself has committed to spending half a billion pounds ($800 million) in new product and technology programs over the next five years. However, this won’t be enough to invest in much-needed engine and electrical technology the automaker needs to compete with rivals such as Bentley, Ferrari and Porsche.

All of its rivals are in the fortunate position to have backing from much larger parent companies whereas Aston Martin is still largely independent.

In a separate interview, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche revealed to Autocar that his company was open to the idea of working with Aston Martin in the future.

Daimler, of course, at one point was going to co-develop a new Maybach sedan with Aston Martin, which was looking to launch its own flagship sedan under the Lagonda brand. The controversial Lagonda SUV concept unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show was also built on a Mercedes-Benz GL platform.

They should collaborate and sign off the Lagonda. Lambo should follow suit with their SAV.

I love the idea of Super car manufacturers take on the SAV ideas of late. I suppose i did step on a few purists toes there;)

Aston Martin talking with Daimler AG about engine development?

According to this morning’s Bloomberg post, Aston Martin is talking with Daimler AG “and other manufacturers” about jointly developing high-end engines and other electronic parts. Andrea Bonomi, Investindustrial’s chairman, said that they’re aiming to reach an agreement within 2 months.

I’m all for it. More modern V8 and V12 engines are very welcome, if only to make them more fuel-efficient.

Let’s hope they will also discuss creating a better automatic, preferably double-clutch gearbox (at the top of my wish list for future Astons).

:)

This has been the longest running story ever...lol My god just sign the papers and lets get going. Swan song for the 6.2L AMG V8 is under the hood of the Vantage. More power than the current V12 Vantage!

And yet the story keeps on coming back:

Daimler AG spokeswoman, Silke Walters, confirmed that the German manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz luxury autos, is in early talks with Aston Martin on supply and technical-cooperation agreements. But, declining to go into specific details, Walters said that “while both sides know and respect each other very much, no decisions have been made”. Discussions also involve Aston Martin owners Investindustrial Advisers SpA and Investment Dar Co., Walters said.

After years of talks between Daimler and Aston Martin, the deal is now being pushed as London-based Investindustrial, a European private-equity fund that acquired 37.5 percent holding in Aston Martin for $250 million, prefers Daimler as their partner for a supply deal. This according to a person familiar with the discussions said. Even with Investindustrial’s preference towards Daimler, a final agreement isn’t imminent, the same person said, asking to remain anonymous due to the private nature of the talks.

Aston Martin is the only global luxury auto brand that does not belong to a larger manufacturing group, making it extremely difficult to match competitors’ lower costs for creating models. With its new backing by Investindustrial, Aston Martin laid out its plans to invest $777 million over the next four years in order to compete with Volkswagen AG’s Bentley and Fiat SpA’s Ferrari and Maserati. Aston and Daimler are an absolutely perfect match. I don't know why they keep on procrastinating with moving forward. Better components and technology for Aston, greater economies of scale for high end technologies for Mercedes on top of positive brand associations for both.

This will create a great synergy, both companies will highly profit from each other. Aston Martin would finally become a solid value. BMW should get Lotus, but looks like they don't care about sportscars.

After dragging on for many years, it is finally official.
AM gets engines, Daimler gets shares

Following months of rumors and speculations, Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG GmbH have announced today plans for a tie-up.
Final agreements will be made before the end of the year, but we already know this deal will allow Aston Martin to access Mercedes-Benz and AMG resources which will lead to the development of bespoke V8 engines. In addition, Aston Martin will utilize some components of the electric and electronic architectures developed by the Germans to launch a new series of V8-powered models.
In return, Daimler AG is going to own a stake of up to five percent in Aston Martin, depending on how the agreement progresses. They will join other shareholders like Adeem Investment and Investindustrial. A supply agreement between Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Daimler AG and Aston Martin is also included in this deal.
AM's product development director Ian Minards declared "We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process." Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH Ola Källenius said "We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG's technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides."

ABOUT FREAKING TIME.......Aston style+AMG Tech = win.

Now AM will have up to date engines. But I don´t see the gains for MB. A 5% stake in AM capital must be quite a thing to let another brand use your engines.

5%/~$50m - worth every penny, just for the schadenfreude of seeing James Bond, on Her Majesty's secret service, pull up in his new Aston Martin powered by 'Mercedes-Benz AMG'!

It'll make commercial sense because Daimler will be able to spread the cost of the development of the V12 by AMG with up to 5,000 additional units a year to Aston Martin.

Plus, I still think Mercedes will be tempted to use their now tantamount to control of Aston Martin to use Aston Martin Lagonda badging on high-end SUVs, to compete eye to eye with the 2016 Bentley Falcon and mooted Rolls-Royce SUV.

Aston Martin in technical partnership with Mercedes-AMG GmbH

Thursday 25 July, 2013, Gaydon: Aston Martin is today announcing moves towards a technical partnership with Mercedes-AMG GmbH, a 100% subsidiary and high performance brand of German multinational automotive corporation Daimler AG. A Letter of Intent to this end has been signed today and both parties are working towards signing definitive agreements before the end of the year. Such agreements are subject to applicable regulatory approvals.

The proposed deal will see Aston Martin access significant Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Mercedes-Benz Cars' resources, allowing the development of bespoke V8 powertrains and the use of certain components of electric/electronic (e/e) architecture.

Daimler AG will own a stake of up to five per cent non-voting shares in Aston Martin depending on the progress of the agreement. The company will join the existing shareholders that include Investment DAR, Adeem Investment and Investindustrial.

The technical partnership will support Aston Martin's launch of a new generation of models that will incorporate cutting edge technology and newly-developed bespoke V8 powertrains. An essential element of the planned partnership is a supply agreement between Mercedes-AMG, Daimler AG and Aston Martin.

Aston Martin, which is Britain's most exclusive sports car company, is celebrating its centenary this year. The company will continue to manufacture all of its sports cars at its Gaydon headquarters in Warwickshire, England.

Aston Martin Product Development Director Ian Minards said: "We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process.

"Aston Martin sources cutting edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next generation sports cars is, clearly, good news."

He added: "Working with Mercedes-AMG in this way while, of course, remaining independent and preserving the unique character and style of Aston Martin that has been the mainstay of the company throughout its 100-year history, points to a very bright future for the company as it starts its second century in business."

Ola Källenius, Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said: "We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG's technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides."

The companies confirm that their respective engineering teams will work together to optimise the implementation of this technical partnership.

Both parties have agreed that no further details of the planned technical partnership will be revealed for the time being.

Sounds like AM will finally get a version of the 6.2L AMG V8 and the elctronics that they needs to make their cars up to date. What will Mercedes get? I don't see it??

Same, all the goodies for a paltry 5.00% stake......AM will still have to pay for all the AMG stuffs albeit at lower prices.

I thought about it and maybe Daimler didn't want a larger stake in AM because it is still in a weak financial position and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It's never wise to get into bed with a bunch of private equity funds.

I am confused they first say they are gonna use their resources for developing bespoke engines and then say they will simply buy engines from them, which one is true ?

There maybe a clause that will force current owners to offer selling the brand to Merc first in case they no longer want AM.
