The Project 003 will be the third Aston hypercar, slotting in beneath the Valkyrie, and our exclusive image previews how it could look.

Aston Martin has confirmed a third mid-engined hypercar is currently under development and that it will be designed to sit alongside the Valkyrie and Valkyrie AMR Pro.

Yet to be named, the rival to the McLaren Senna and Ferrari LaFerrari is currently known under the codename Project 003. And Red Bull Racing will be involved with the car’s development.

The project is still in an early state and Aston says that the new model will arrive in 2021, and while both right-hand and left-hand-drive production is planned, the car will be limited to 500 examples globally. It will slot into the range beneath the Valkyrie, of which only 175 editions are being produced.

Speaking exclusively to Auto Express, Aston boss Andy Palmer revealed that car is an additional part of his seven-year plan. “It falls into the category of a ‘special’,” Palmer told us. “It’s the connector, it’s the dot between the Valkyrie and the Ferrari 488 competitor[also under development]. Let’s put it as a LaFerrari competitor so it’s in that kind of realm, like the McLaren Senna and Porsche 918. As for power, it would more than compete with those.”

Aston says that Project 003 will be mid-engined, built around a lightweight structure, and road legal. A V6 turbocharged petrol-electric hybrid engine will provide power. “In the 003 it’s a turbocharged V6,” Palmer said. “There will be hybrid power in there, but very much tuned from a KERS perspective than a normal hybridisation perspective; think of it as race-tuned.

“Obviously it’s a new engine, designed by Aston Martin. We’re demonstrating that in that V12 arena we have mastery, so V12 and V6 is obviously closely related.”

Power output should sit somewhere between that of the DBS Superleggera and Valkyrie, at around 1,000bhp. That should translate to a 0-62mph time of less than three seconds and a top speed upwards of 200mph. Technology will be borrowed from the Valkyrie project, such as active aerodynamics and active suspension.

A single sketch (above) hints at the design of the new model, suggesting a wild aerodynamic profile and a fighter-jet-style canopy. Despite this, Aston promises that Project 003 is being designed to be a more practical offering than the Valkyrie, with space for luggage. Our exclusive image gives you a better idea of how the finished model could look.

Palmer added: “If you go from Valkyrie to our 488 rival, from £2.5million to £200,000, that jump probably isn’t enough to give you the view of the mother and the father.

“When you see the design language for 003, it’s really interesting. We’re designing 003 and what we call AM9 [the 488 competitor] side by side so you see that bloodline.”

The 003 is the latest in a long line of new models being developed by Aston. The next big launch from the British firm is its first SUV previewed by the DBX concept; it’s expected to be called Varekai when it arrives early next year. Project 003 will follow shortly after Aston’s other mid-engined model, the AM9 Ferrari 488 competitor.

Aston Martin’s ‘Son Of Valkyrie’ Hypercar Will Do The Norse Gods Proud

Aston Martin has published the first teaser image of its upcoming 003 hypercar, affectionately known as ‘Son of Valkyrie.’

The all-new vehicle will slot below the Valkyrie in Aston Martin’s range but slot above the automaker’s impending rival to the Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 720S. Based off what we can see in this picture and rumoured specifications about the 003, the car should offer performance similar to what the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder did a few years ago.

I am happy, that after years of building the same old models, Aston is finally on the move, attacking with new fresh models!

This hardly counts as new fresh model as it will be a highly limited production car for car collectors. I would rather see a mid-engined 488/Hurecan or Aventador competitor from AM.

I hope this is a new model and not a variant of the Valkyrie like McLaren does with its models

It depends on how much money AM have for R&D. The Valkyrie is a track car. They could easily repurpose the monocoque and suspension for a more road biased hyper car.

you are probably right as investing more money into something that's considered risky would be foolish. It's better to use economy of scale here and spread out the cost of development for something like this. Truthfully, I don't think it compromises either the Valkyrie or SOV (project 003). I have a feeling that SOV will be as posh as a P1 or LaFer.

From Autocar.
In bold the most relevant aspects.

The Aston Martin AM-RB 003 is the firm’s incredible new hypercar with McLaren P1-aping performance levels. It has been revealed at the Geneva motor show alongside the Vanuqish Vision supercar and Lagonda All-Terrain SUV concepts.

If Valkyrie is the best of the best, then the 003 is the best at £1m”, Reichman said of AM-RB 003, which Aston will put into production in late 2021.

The new model, which Autocar received exclusive access to ahead of the Geneva motor show, is the second to be co-developed between Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies in Milton Keynes, and will bridge the sizable gap in Aston’s fast-growing range of mid-engined models between the Valkyrie and the production Vanquish.

AM-RB 003’s performance and positioning – likely more than 1000bhp and the kind of performance that would threaten the Nurburgring lap record – would place it alongside next-generation versions of the likes of the McLaren P1, LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, should this trio, which launched in 2013, have been replaced by the time it launches.

The model will use Aston’s new twin-turbo V6 engine mated to a hybrid system, and the car will be built around a carbonfibre architecture and using carbonfibre bodywork. “It will have the same principles as the Valkyrie with its all carbonfibre tub but will be more usable,” said Reichman.

The Geneva concept car is 90% representative of the final production model, according to Aston’s design chief.

Aston boss Andy Palmer calls it “the bridge” in the world of mid-engined Aston Martins. “The aerodynamics and tub construction filter down from the Valkyrie to this, and then the new V6 powertrain will go down to the Vanquish,” he said. “The Valkyrie is the fastest production car ever and now we’ve created a son of it that’s a halo car above everyone else’s range, like the P1, LaFerrari, and [McLaren] Senna.”

There is further technology transfer from the Valkyrie to AM-RB 003 through the active suspension and electronic systems, with Aston claiming the dynamic brief for the car is to be class leading on both road and track.

Those aerodynamics will not be as extreme as the Valkyrie, but will in turn be more extreme than on the Vanquish. A big bulk of the aerodynamic work is done under the floor and through the large rear diffuser. The AM-RB 003 also adopts aerospace aerodynamic morphing technology with a new variable airfoil called FlexFoil, which alters downforce without changing the physical angle as with an active rear wing, designed to improve aero performance and reduce wind noise, while also virtually eliminating turbulence and drag.

While the AM-RB 003 adopts a look and ethos inspired by the Valkyrie, it does so while being more usable. The doors open out forwards and out of the roof, inspired by an LMP1 car, to improve ingress and aggress. Unlike the Valkyrie, there is also luggage and storage space for oddments and a wider centre console to put more space between driver and passenger.

The cabin is unashamedly built around the driver and creating the perfect alignment between driver seat, steering wheel and pedals in what Aston calls ‘Apex Ergonomics’, with all major controls are aligned for the driver and their eyeline. Instead of a traditional instrument binnacle there is a small screen mounted directly on the steering column, with infotainment provided by what Aston calls ‘bring your own’, by simply mirroring a smartphone.

Aston has not quoted any key stats for the AM-RB 003 beyond the engine configuration, but as with the Valkyrie and Vanquish, there has been an obsession with weight saving and optimised packaging. For example, all four head and tail lights weigh less than one DB11 headlight, while 3D printing is used for parts big and small in the interior, including a centre console that weighs half of what it would using traditional construction methods.

Development of the AM-RB 003 will now continue in Milton Keynes, where Aston has a team of 130 people based within the Red Bull Advanced Technologies campus. The site is the home of development for Aston’s mid-engined models.

Palmer has also previously said that the AM-RB 003 could form the basis for an assault on outright victory for Le Mans early after a regulation changed to make them more aligned to hypercar road cars than the LMP1 prototypes at present.

They got the same problem as mclaren they can’t make a pretty enough car. And I’m this market looks are important.

But I must say that the slower they are the better they look. The vanquish is half decent, but then again it’s 3 years off how will it look by then ?

To me this looks like a direct answer to the AMG One. V6 Hybrid, both have F1 involvement and they are less extreme hypercar similar to P1, 918 and LaF.

I could see a new Hyper Trinity rise in form of this, AMG One and maybe Lambo's LB48H. What a time to be a car enthusiast.

Aston's stock is still down ~34% since it's IPO last year. These projects are cool, but they need to nail their "mainstream" offerings. The DB11 and Vantage were not a great start.
