Dealer wouldn't Deal

So my younger brother moved in. We were looking for a certified used 2015 GTI we could both drive around. As it happens , we were in Chicago for thanksgiving. As the stores opened on Black friday, we thought we would search around. Found a nice white one, with DSG, Xenon, Navigation, autobahn package, low milage and clean records. Reviewing the car's history, it seems like its been sitting on the lot since mid July. The car was listed for 26,990. After a test drive we both liked it and decided to make an offer. I wanted a 5.6% discount off his asking price which I thought was fair and in keeping with the Sale spirit going on during Black Friday.
In my mind I was thinking, I should have asked for more but heck, I wanted that car so didn't want to low ball him. I also knew that in the US the GTI are getting a small update with apple car play for 2016, not that I really care about that, but I'm getting into a car thats nearly 2 years old now, so a small discount isn't out of order.
To my surprise, the dealer declined my offer, but worse, he countered with a mere 500 dollar deduction. He started babbling on why he couldn't agree to the price and really sounded full of himself. Needless to say, I stopped him short, thanked him and walked out.

Anyways, there are plenty of similar cars out there. Surely there is a dealer out there willing to deal.
Please share your dealer good or bad experience.

Discounts depend on the dealer and type of car. If it's a main dealer and the car is desirable it can be very difficult to get a discount as theyou know the car will inevirsbly be sold.

Countering with arguments about there being cheaper alternatives on the market doesn't work as some of them are from third party dealers, which deducts from the price.

Sorry you didn't walk away with a new car, but if you go to another VW dealer, don't be offended if you don't get a discount on a good car.

Hmm...find a VW forum relevant to your market and see what other guys are paying. That's the only way to know if the discount you are after is reasonable.

When I was negotiating my S3 the local dealer was offering a discount of about $3k. Same usual crap about it being a low volume model, and they will sell the car to someone else at full price etc. After some online research I found an interstate dealer who was offering $9K discounts. Even after factoring in freight etc. is was a no brainer.

I too recommend buying a car from across the country. I saved £2,000,3,000 by getting mine from outside the South East of England where cars are more expensive. Although I didn't get to see it become sealing the deal, I was sent videos and had full faith in the dealer delivering me a spotless car.

Well, wait till u see black friday here in Brazil... The stores raise the price of all their products by at least 50% one week before black friday so when the day comes they lower the price back to what it was... Corruption is everywhere around here...

Ultimately found one that did want to deal! It's a brand new 2015 Black GTI with cloth interior, Xenon and DSG. Nearly 11% off MSRP, in your face initial dealer hahaha! Yes this has less options than the CPO one, but was cheaper and had no miles on it. My brother loves it. I quite like it myself. It has more torque than my Cayman, come to think of it most turbo cars have more torque than it, but I digress !
I will post more impressions on the GTI soon.
