Epic French barn find of 100 cars includes rare Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider [video]

An epic French barn find contains a massive 100-car lineup among which is a rare 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider.

This could actually be the most important barn find ever as besides the limited California Spider (only 37 units made), there's also a 1956 Maserati A6G Gran Sport Frua and a Bugatti 57 Ventoux. 60 cars out of a total of 100 are going to be auctioned in February by Artcurial during the Retromobile Salon and according to auctioneers the Ferrari will fetch up to €12 million whereas the Maserati should go for €1.2 million.

The cars belonged to Roger Baillon, a French transport magnate who started assembling the collection in the 50s but two decades later his business began to have problems so he had to sell about 50 cars and didn't have money to restore the other 100 vehicles that were find three months ago rusting away on a French estate. Artcurial believes only 60 of them are still salvageable and these have an estimated combined value of €12-15 million.

Extraordinary!


How does a collection this large and incredible remain unnoticed for so many years?


I adore the 250 GT Cali .......but that Lancia is a gorgeous car. I like those yellow French headlamps on these classic Italian cars.

It is quite amazing how valuable old Ferraris have become in recent times; I wonder what has caused this sudden frenzy for Ferraris. I have noted that prices for old Bentleys have gone pretty nuts too ....speaking of which, curious that there are no Bentleys on the list.

I got very lucky on Sunday, I had a lunch meeting with a potential business partner in Moscow, we got talking about cars and he asked if I was intersted in seeing his collection, of course I said yes. The main collectrion is housed in a very impressive pavillion, it mostly consisted of bubble cars, Rolls Royces and pre WW2 American luxury cars like Auburns, Cords and Pierce Arrows. He then asked if we wanted to see something special, so of course I said yes, we drove down the road a short distance to a series of garages, he opened up the door and there were 6 cars from the Baillon Collection, just an amazing day, I could have been there for hours.
