Corolla Europe’s 2019 Toyota Corolla Sedan Gains Hybrid Version

The Toyota Corolla is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

Fresh from the all-new Corolla Sedan’s world debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show, Toyota has now released information on the European-spec model.

The 2019 Corolla Sedan will expand Toyota’s Corolla lineup in Europe to three body styles, adding to the existing Hatchback and Touring Sports. The automaker says the four-door model targets “young professionals looking for more prestigious styling combined with superior onboard space and comfort.”

The design is identical with the Chinese- and North American-spec versions unveiled hours ago. However, the European model features some equipment particularities.

Toyota Corolla Sedan goes the hybrid way for the first time in Europe

More specifically, the engine lineup includes a hybrid, a first for the Corolla Sedan in Europe. It’s the same 1.8-liter self-charging hybrid system that’s also available on the hatchback and wagon. It delivers a system output of 122 PS (120 hp) with a claimed combined fuel economy of 4.3 l/100 km (65.7 mpg UK) on the WLTP test cycle. Corresponding CO2 emissions are 98 g/km.

Depending on driving conditions, Toyota claims the Corolla Sedan Hybrid offers up to 50 percent all-electric drive on the everyday commute.

All-new TNGA GA-C platform coexists with the old 1.6-liter gasoline engine

In addition to the hybrid version, the Corolla Sedan will carry on with the 1.6-liter gasoline engine of its predecessor. The unit delivers 132 PS (130 hp) and it comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT. The WTLP-rated average fuel economy is 6.1 l/100 km (46.3 mpg UK), with CO2 emissions of 139 g/km.

Compared to the previous Corolla Sedan, the shift to the TNGA GA-C platform results in a lower center of gravity, a 60-percent more rigid body shell, and standard multi-link suspension on all models. As a result, Toyota says the 2019 Corolla Sedan offers better handling and stability “without compromising ride and comfort.”

The 2019 Corolla Sedan shares its 2,700mm (106.3in) wheelbase with the wagon version, resulting in a spacious cabin with “ample legroom and high comfort levels for rear seat passengers.”

Very tidy design by Toyota. However I suspect the design and proportions make less of an impact in person than they do in press photos.

Here is the video of Corolla Touring. Not a bad looking car.
When will test reviews of this car in Europe come?

It's about time for the Corolla to be introduced with a hybrid version. Strange that Toyota didn't add it for its, if not the world's, most popular model.

The Corolla is an interesting car. I feel that it's a brand within Toyota with several different models that bear the same name sold in different countries. Almost every new Corolla is vastly different from its predecessor.

I like the Corolla in general, and this model looks nice despite the bonnet / hood that continues its upslope to the windshield, giving a slight mini van like side profile. It's better for visibility, but I'm not so keen on such a design.

I've driven most of the earlier Corolla generations up until the Auris (that included). It always felt as emotional as driving a dishwasher.

I'd characterize the Corolla as a household transportation appliance.

Tell me about it. It's such a fragmented name to the point that I no longer know what it stands for. The Corolla has always been famous its reliability. Engines have been good for up to 500,000 miles with little maintenance service-ability that's so easy any mechanic with novice knowledge can diagnose and fix a fault with ease.

This is why some countries in Africa, Asia and South America still drive older Corollas and Honda Accords.

In 2014-2015 my car with a 1998 Toyota Celica with 120,000 miles on the clock. Yet on idle it sounded smoother than many of the newer cars on my street and at work. When I took it to a clutch change to a national franchise called Mr.Clutch, the gent that served me was gobsmacked to find out through the computer that a clutch replacement including labour was going to only cost me £150 compared with £400 for a Mini Cooper which requires a lot more labour.

Here's the engine bay of a Corolla with the same engine I had. The engine bay is so simple and spacious that you can even see the fuel filter by just peeking inside and unlike modern Audi's hardly any repairs requires pulling out the engine, or in the case of the Mini, removing the entire front facia.

Nice post @Centurion (y)

Toyota (and Nissan, to a lesser extent I think) has a habit of producing several cars under the same name to the point of confusion. The Corolla name alone has so many models (Corolla, Corolla Ceres, Corolla Compact, Corolla Levin, etc...). I used to consider myself a "car catalog" when I was young where there was no company that I don't know its models, but when it comes to Toyota and Japanese car companies in general, I tried to know as much as I did because the internet was neither available nor useful back then, and car magazines that I used to collect barely mention some of the Japan only models.

In my opinion, Corolla is the true people's car because it was the epitome of basic reliable transportation. Toyota used to, and still, model the car after its more expensive offerings, and in the Middle East where I am from, you can still see Corollas from the 90's, 80's or even the late 70's (rarely, however) being driven on the streets. The Japanese cars were way better suited to the Middle East market as they were cheap, simple to fix and withstand a regularly 40~50 degrees summer.

That is the beauty of owning a Japanese car. It could be without emotions at all, but the car will rarely fail you. My friend had a 2004 Honda Civic with over 200,000 miles on it, and the car is still being used to this day!! apart from some regular maintenance, the car is still working good and no rattles in the cockpit.

I believe that the Japanese car manufacturers are aware that owners of these cars may do some self maintenance, so they kept things simple and basic for a very good reliability record.

However, I don't think we'll see such a simple view under the hood anymore due to the ever increasing safety and technology requirements. That's the compromise for the new market, I assume.

At least the new Corolla and a few other Toyota models are available with either hybrid or ICE only drivetrain. In all fairness the hybrids are reliable. Older Lexus GS and LS models are so reliable that I would consider buying one without warranty while I wouldn't be brave enough to buy a 5-6 year old A6, E-class or 5-Series without warranty.
