Ford Board Member and Pacific Gas & Electric CEO Tony Earley has revealed Chevrolet and Ford are considering electric versions of the Silverado and F-150.

Speaking at a Detroit Economic Club luncheon, Earley said he has had discussions with both automakers about converting their popular full-size pickups into electric vehicles. However, he noted this would require a significant investment and the government might need to step up to help cover the development costs.

When asked for comment, GM electrification communications manager Kevin Kelly told Automotive News their discussions were "informal brainstorming sessions" and no decision has been made about an electric Silverado.

Until battery technology has made huge leaps, electric pickups will not be viable in the next 5 years.
