I would have liked to see this backed up by numbers to say one car feels faster than the other without numbers isn’t good enough.

Yes. M135i is phenomenal.
And I have come to appreciate its looks. I especially like that high Glasshouse and low roof line. I even like its pig-nose as my daughter calls it Peppa Wutz.
Compared to the uniform blandness of the Golf in which I have seen a VIII in Berlin which all you can say there is that it's a Golf.
The interior and connectivity is something else entirely however.
Which is why I say you should do an M1. Which they say it is out of the question but not outwith M Performance?
Unfortunately they have replaced my press car with an 120d with M-Sport in Alpine White. Which is called Porky.

No mention of a M140i and I don’t think there will be one, the M135i is as hot as it will get.
The new M135i will fair better against the old F20 M135i but against the M140i with the excellent B58 it doesn’t stand a chance.

I was just puzzled, because at 11:20 within this video he mentioned an upcoming M140i ... and it wasn't the first time I heard that rumour ... so I thought maybe BMW already gave some insight...
But I fully agree with you! The B58 in this small package was just a marvel ... hard to be beaten by a pumped up 4 banger...

Basically I've to admit, there is some "Schadenfreude" in me, when the F40 gets critizised by car mags ... just because I still think the demise of RWD plarform was a fault ...
When reading the linked verdict, it reads like, if BMW would just have tuned the suspension a lot stiffer, then in this comparison it had got a better rating ... on the other hand, there might be other mags, which don't appreciate over stiff setups just for the sake of better laptimes for a vanilla compact class vehicle?
