We already know Lamborghini is planning a special car for its 50th anniversary this year, and which is set to be unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show on March 5.

Now, thanks to comments from Lamborghini design chief Filippo Prini, we also know that it will be the fastest model ever launched by the automaker.

Speaking with Drive, Prini said the car will be “a big surprise” and that Lamborghini hopes it will “shock” the automotive world once revealed.

That's quite the tall order, considering the new car will have to share the spotlight with Ferrari’s Enzo replacement as well as the production McLaren P1 in Geneva, and possibly something new from Pagani.

The good news is that it has a lot going for it. The new car is expected to be faster than the track-only Sesto Elemento, which can accelerate to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

However, unlike the Sesto Elemento, it will be street legal.

It’s not clear yet how many examples Lamborghini will build, though as many as 10 units are possible.

It will most likely be based on the Aventador, just like the one-off Aventador J unveiled at last year’s Geneva show.

During the same interview, Lamborghini engineering chief Maurizio Reggiano explained that bespoke models were an important part of the automaker’s growth strategy. The cars are built at the special concept development center opened at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy.

Looks like Lamborghini is implementing McLaren MSO strategy.

Well, whatever, I did not have the intention, as I though I'd just go to Frankfurt in September, but I have I feelng I'll have to go to Geneva. I better try to book earlier and try to get a VIP entry if possible. There are just going to be to many things to see:

- Alfa Romeo 4C
- Porsche Cayman S
- BMW 4 Series
- Ferrari F70
- McLaren P1
and now this new Lamborghini.

The way they announce it, I hope it won't be disappointing, as was the "new" Gallardo.

Worldwide unveil of our next masterpiece is scheduled for March 5th, 2013 11:00 am at Geneva Motor Show. Guess how will look like the new car:
-carbon fiber shark
-street fighter
-u.f.o."

We thought they would be FIVE (Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren, Pagani, Koenigsegg), but they will be SIX. Lamborghini could not let the attraction go elsewhere, so they pulled out of nowhere (well out of the Aventador in fact) the Lamborghini Veneno. Only three units, white, red and green, already all sold out.

That looks like a ten-year-olds cheap idea of advanced aerodynamics.

I bet they could've given it a beautiful design without sacrificing function. But I hope I'm wrong

I think Lamborghini should have better not responded to the Hypercar Competition. They don't have the ability to build such cars. This is exagerated. I see no beauty, nor true function over form. I doubt with it they have discovered a new aerodynamic miracle. It just looks overdone for the sake of being something, I don't like this, it shows inferiority complex. As for the interior, it would be nice if some of that made it in to the Aventador. I prefere the rventon transformation over this one, and the Aventador J is also much better. I wonder how much weight have they saved.

Its way too ugly even for such a segment where aerodynamic function is the rule. Yikes that is skin-crawling ugly.

Well, it's quite clear that Lamborghini are running an operation quite unlike it's competitors where motorsport is ingrained in their heritage and as such, speed and technology are at the forefront of their flagship vehicles. Lamborghini's flagships are therefore only really comparable to Pagani and Ferrari's Special Projects division where exclusivity reigns supreme.

It's a smart piece of business by them - the men in charge of Lamborghini understand it's fruitless to take on Ferrari, Porsche and now, McLaren, at their own game. Why not stick to what Lamborghini does best and create utterly ridiculous and gorgeous pieces of rolling artwork? At USD$4.5 million a pop, that's a nice return for what's essentially a rebodied Aventador. Customers get their exclusive dream machine/investment piece, while Lamborghini elevates their brand cachet and makes an absolute fortune by doing so. Win-win.

"I see no beauty, nor true function over form. I doubt with it they have discovered a new aerodynamic miracle"

How do you know anything about the aerodynamic properties of this car? Why have you assumed that it hasn't undergone extensive aerodynamic testing and tuning? I've always sensed a biased against Lambo on this forum. If you don't see beauty then that's your opinion and its fine. But to assume this car is just slapped together with zero regard to function (because only a racing program can teach of such things apparently) is plain biased.

I personally think the car looks amazing. Anything beyond that, to make some sort of factual statement about what this car is or isn't (given that we don't know anything officially), would be simply unfounded.

You do raise a good point Lambornima. I don't know about this forum, but I admit I am biased against Lamborghini. I find it difficult to take it seriously. It has to do with how the designs try to imitate elements of a stealth aircraft. I find that silly and childish - maybe if I was still 16 and not such a jaded old man, I probably would appreciate it more. Just my personal opinion.

As for this car, it is obviously outrageous and over the top like only a Lamborghini can be. The car also obviously has some elements of Audi R18 LMP. Is any of that functional or just superficial resemblance, I don't know. Anyway it is not my cup of beverage. But I admit, seeing one in the carbon, cruising along the boulevard is going to turn heads like nothing else. Not a P1. Not a Huayra. Not a naked Kate Upton.

ps. Can some one point to me the point of the camouflage on the seats? It is little stuff like that that makes it difficult fo me to take Lamborghini seriously.

You're entitled to your opinion. Unfortunately I think you've just managed to build an image of Lamborghini in your own mind which doesn't necessarily reflect reality. You're not alone (on this forum or others) to think Lambo just shoves a big engine into a car and makes it look cool and that the only real engineering is done by Ferrari and Porsche and the others. If that's your image of Lambo then I'm sorry to say you've just created that in your mind and are just reinforcing it. As for the jet-fighter design...that's the design language they chose to use for their cars, which looking at the LP560, LP670 and LP700, they implemented very well.

Lastly that's not camo. Its a type of carbon fiber. It was everywhere on the Sesto Elemento:

If I can remember correctly, they are a new type of carbon composite material formed by using a new and quicker manufacturing process, which gives it the unique pattern. It first appeared on the Sesto Elemento and then on the Aventador J.

I also think that the styling is way too extreme to be entirely driven by functional needs, but having said that, well done to Lamborghini for going absolutely mad to celebrate their 50th birthday.

@lambornima,
I am/was impressed with some of the engineering effort behind the Aventador like the ISR transmission, the new engine which is remarkably ligt for a V12 at just 239kg and the CF tub. But like I admitted, the design language of their choice which I find rather superficial and silly plays a big part in me forming the caricature I have of Lamborghini. That and the lack any credible professional racing effort.
