The patent filings of the various automakers have been, for year, a great indicator of what is to come. When Audi, for example, registered the "RS3" trademark, we all expected a hot-hatch based on the A3, designed to be an 1M fighter. We didn't expect it to have wider tyres in the front, compared to the rear, in order to fight understeer, but the trademark filing was a good hint.
Which brings us to the latest filing by BMW and Mercedes.Searching the German patent office, reveals that BMW has registered an important number of combinations of the letter "M" and two or three numbers. What sounds interesting, though, are the "Active Tourer, 2er Active Tourer and 2 series Active Tourer" that hint to a GT type of variant for the next 1 and 2 series. Equally interesting are the "SportMode, CoolMode, Air Collar, BMW Turbotec, Drive eCharged, LifeDrive, i Pedelec" filings that hint to a new series of hybrid/electric relevant technologies, with the "Pedelec" nameplate being a new and amazing styled bicycle, which will be covered with a new article, later this week.
On the Mercedes-Benz side, we noticed the "MLS/ MLS-Class" filing, which suggests the possibility of a new SUV vehicle, possiblybased on the current ML. MB also registered the "Magic Vision Control, Active Multibeam LED, Lightorange, Lightshine" trademarks that hint to a new lighting technology. Moreover, the register of the "9-G Tronic" nameplate, made us wonder, how many gears are actually enough. Finally, the "GLC 45, A 45, CLC 45 AMG" trademarks clearly mean that we are to expect even more new AMGs.
