Levante Maserati SUV To Be Called Levante

The Maserati Levante (Tipo M161) is an executive crossover SUV produced by Maserati at the Mirafiori factory in Turin from 2016. The Levante went on sale in Europe in May 2016, and in North America in September 2016. The Levante was named after a warm, easterly wind that blows in the western Mediterranean Sea, southern France, down to the Strait of Gibraltar.

Maserati has ambitions plans to boost its annual sales to as much as 50,000 units per year in the mid to longer term, up from less than 7,000 units sold last year. To do so, the automaker intends on two key model introductions with which it hopes to acquire new customers, particularly in emerging markets such as China, India and Russia.
One of these will be an SUV previewed by the latest Kubang concept car and based on Jeep Grand Cherokee running gear. The other is a new ‘baby’ sedan to be sold alongside the existing Quattroporte, which itself will be receiving a redesign at the end of this year. While there was previous speculation that the name of the new SUV model would be Cinqueporte, Italian for “five doors,” and the baby sedan would be called Levante, as revealed by a recent trademark filing, it turns out Maserati has other plans.

During a press conference at the 2012 Paris Auto Show today, Maserati confirmed that its SUV will in fact be called the Levante, as in Via Emilia Levante in Bologna, Italy, where the Maserati brothers, almost a century ago, first dreamt of the company that today still bears their name. With the new Maserati Levante set to go on sale in 2014, the year Maserati celebrates its centennial, it seems a proper name and, in many ways, a bridge to the automaker’s future.

As for the baby sedan, Maserati said this model will be called the Ghibli, a name previously used by the automaker for a two-seater GT and convertible built between 1967 and 1973.

2016 Maserati Levante mule spied for the first time

Will resemble the Kubang concept
A development mule for the 2016 Maserati Levante has been spied undergoing testing in Italy.

While the prototype bears no resemblance to the production model, we can see the crossover will be based on the Ghibli and feature a number of modifications including an increased ride height, a wider track and possibly a more focused all-wheel drive system. The prototype also features weights on the roof to simulate the additional mass of the crossover.

Under the hood, we can expect a variety of engines which were previously announced as part ofMaserati's five year plan. Petrol choices will include a V6 with outputs of 350 PS (257 kW) and 425 PS (312 kW) as well as a V8 that develops more than 560 PS (412 kW). The model will also be offered with a diesel engine that has outputs of 250 PS (184 kW), 275 PS (202 kW) and 340 PS (250 kW).

The Levante will be introduced sometime next year and be built at the Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy.

Reminds me of the Infiniti Qx70.

I just don't understand how Maserati doesn't make the taillights LED.

Come on...where's the tech???

Also, those rear tires look to skinny. Not athletic enough for a "sporty" brand.

I love me a Maser!

Maserati can do no wrong in my rose tinted world. Especially since the 2.0L V6 Bi-turbo Ghilbi out of 1995... Absolutely bonkers! Anyway, I digress! Here's to 50,000 Masers (including you Levante) tooling about on our roads!

There will also be a diesel engine with outputs of 250 PS (184 kW), 275 PS (202 kW) and 340 PS (250 kW).

Maserati Levante patent image
The Maserati Levante is inching closer to production as the company has recently filed a series of design patents.

Previewed by the Kubang concept, the production model has a familiar design but adopts a new front fascia with restyled headlights, fog lights and a new lower air intake. The sides appear to remain pretty faithful to the concept but the rear end has a more conventional tailgate, restyled taillights and a four-tailpipe exhaust system.

As we have previously reported, the Levante is expected to be unveiled at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will be offered with a variety of engines including a V6 with outputs of 350 PS (257 kW) and 425 PS (312 kW) as well as a V8 that develops more than 560 PS (412 kW). There will also be a diesel engine with outputs of 250 PS (184 kW), 275 PS (202 kW) and 340 PS (250 kW).
