Mercedes 4-CYLINDER Petrol ENGINE M 254 COMES IN 2020 -

MARKUS JORDAN
NOVEMBER 17, 2019

Mercedes-Benz will probably introduce the new 4-cylinder M 254 petrol engine towards the end of 2020, completing the rollout of the new Mercedes-Benz engine family. The M 254 is the successor of the M 274 and part of the new modular engine generation.

M 254 AS THE LAST MEMBER OF THE CURRENT ENGINE GENERATION
The M 254 is expected to have a displacement of two liters, as it will have an identical cylinder displacement of around 500 cc as part of the Mercedes-Benz modular engine generation.

A clear advantage of the M 254 series is that the modular engine construction kit from Mercedes-Benz with uniform cylinder spacings makes it possible to produce the engines more cost-effectively on a common production line.

CERTIFICATION TO EURO 7 EXPECTED
This means that the successor generation of the M 274 has the same capacity as a four-cylinder in-line and will later be used both in transverse and longitudinal installation at Mercedes-Benz. When using the engine is parallel to expect that the new four-cylinder is already certified to Euro 7.

Is this info on the W206 C-class vs W205? Basically the C200 version in international markets?

I thought this M254 engine was the 4-cylinder launched in the C300, E300 and E350?

There is no such thing as longitudinal and horizontal version. M264 can be mounted longitudinally in C/E Class or transverse in A/CLA...

Yes, I indeed confused the numbers. I meant the difference between M260 and M264. (my 2020 GLC300 has M264)
Thanks for clarifying!
By the way, isn’t it unusual to introduce M254 so soon after the introduction of M264? (MY 2018)

Four-cylinder petrol engine also with a second-generation ISG

The four-cylinder M 254 petrol engine with a second-generation starter-generator with an additional output of up to 15 kW and 200 Nm more torque is also celebrating its première in the C-Class. Thanks to energy recovery and the ability to "glide" with the engine switched off, the petrol engine is highly efficient. In the M 254, Mercedes-Benz has for the first time combined all the innovations of the modular engine family of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units in a single engine. They include NANOSLIDE® cylinder coating, CONICSHAPE® cylinder honing (trumpet honing) and the exhaust aftertreatment system positioned directly at the engine.

A completely new feature is the segment charger with flow connection, an advancement of the twin-scroll technology for even more instantaneous response of the forced induction system. The completely newly developed segment turbocharger is a result of cooperation between Mercedes-Benz turbocharger developers and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. The technology transfer to series production sets new standards with respect to power combined with maximum efficiency. For short periods, the output of the C 300 (combined fuel consumption: 7.0-6.6 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 159-150 g/km)2 can additionally be increased by up to 20 kW overboost.
