With trend-setting technologies, Mercedes-Benz is launching a new generation of combustion engines on the road. Including a four-cylinder ottomotor with high efficiency in favor of environmentally-friendly performance development.

An important member of a newly developed family of engines developed by Mercedes-Benz is the new four-cylinder ottomotor with a liter output of more than 100 kW. It projects in power regions that until now have been reserved for the six-cylinder units with capacity for displacement. At the same time, it consumes significantly less fuel than a six-cylinder engine of this type. Special features of the engine include the Twinscroll exhaust turbocharger, 48-V starter generator (EQ Boost) and 48-V electric water pump.

Twin Scroll turbocharger
Mercedes-Benz relies on Twinscroll technology for turbocharged turbochargers to boost performance and spontaneous responsiveness. In contrast to conventional systems, the exhaust ducts of two cylinders in the flow-optimized manifold are combined in a Twinscroll exhaust gas turbocharger. This charging concept allows a high torque in the low speed range with a high specific power due to a consequent flame separation of the cylinders.

A further improved intake air duct with extremely short air passages and an extremely compact compressor housing additionally ensures spontaneous response and a fast response to accelerator pedal movements. The Twinscroll exhaust gas turbocharger has an electric wastegate plate, which allows quick changes to the charging pressure.
In order to reduce the exhaust emissions, an Otto particle filter is used in addition to the proven piezo injectors with good mixture preparation and a further developed combustion chamber. Further efficiency measures are an inlet CAMTRONIC and a package for reducing friction.

The new ottomotor is combined in the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet with a 48-volt electrical system, which is used for the belt-driven starter generator (EQ Boost) and the electric water pump. The basic advantages of a 48-volt electrical system: it offers four times the power of a 12-volt network, but avoids the additional safety architecture of a high-voltage network.
48 volt electrical system and starter generator
With the 48-volt electrical system, the important hybrid functions "recuperation", "boosting" and "sailing" can be realized without high-voltage components in combination with the belt-driven starter generator. This enables significant savings in consumption.
The belt-driven starter generator is coupled to the internal combustion engine as is usually the generator. Thus the system uses existing generator attachments and does not interfere with the design of the drive train. In addition, the durability of such a starter concept is so good that the engine can be switched off much more frequently and thus at any time when it is not needed: whether it is rolling out or so-called sailing, ie a fuel-saving rolling at higher speeds as soon as the driver of the accelerator pedal goes.
In addition to consumption and CO 2savings, the 48-volt electrical system also makes it possible to increase comfort. This is because a 48-volt system can turn a combustion engine very evenly to idle speed. The NVH behavior (noise, vibration, harshness) benefits from it, the transition at the engine start is even quieter: the engine runs again, as if it had not been at all out.
By integrating a 48-volt electrical system, there will also be advantages for other functions in the vehicle. Due to the higher voltage, only a quarter of the currents occur at the same power.Pipes can therefore be thinned and thus lighter - which indirectly contributes to fuel savings. The 48-volt electrical system is also a pioneer in the further expansion of infotainment and assistance systems.
