Mercedes seeks development partner for A, B class

PARIS -- Mercedes-Benz is looking for a partner to share engineering and manufacturing costs for its next-generation A- and B-class cars.

Mercedes is expected to replace the A class in 2011 and the B class a year later. Getting a partner for the two models could help Mercedes cut costs.

"We have to accept that Mercedes alone will not achieve volumes some of our global competitors have," said Thomas Weber, DaimlerChrysler board member for r&d. "We are thinking about our strategy for the next generation of these cars."

Weber, interviewed at the Paris auto show, would not identify possible partners. But PSA/Peugeot-Citroen is considered a potential candidate, two Mercedes sources say. PSA already has a joint venture with Mercedes rival BMW to build gasoline engines for BMW's Mini and for PSA's small cars.

"We talk with everybody about everything. We do not have a final project with Mercedes, though," said Gilles Michel, PSA's board member responsible for platforms, technology development and purchasing.

The second-generation A class went on sale in Europe in late 2004. The first-generation B class followed in the summer of 2005. Mercedes typically replaces vehicles after seven years.

Both cars share a costly and complicated "sandwich" platform that consists of a top and bottom cover with expensive reinforcements in the middle. A basic vehicle usually is cheaper because it consists of one sheet of metal.

The platform will not be used for the next generation of the products because it would mean the A and B class could not share engines or components with other Mercedes and Chrysler group cars.

"It's all about cost in this extremely competitive segment. The result will be a true Mercedes," said one high-level Mercedes source who requested anonymity. "Customers won't spot any difference and will not care whether components are shared with Chrysler or a French company."

Weber said sharing will be an important part of the Mercedes profit model in the years to come.

"One of many questions we need to answer for our future product portfolio in the (A- and B-class segment) is the question about competitiveness and production volumes," Weber said. "The same is true for Chrysler, where we are also striving to increase volume.

"A possible answer may be found in shared components and in an intensive discussion about the right engines and transmissions for cars of both brands."

DaimlerChrysler also is looking for a partner for a Dodge small car for the United States. Chery Automotive of China is a contender.

I think this project is silly to begin with. Why does MB need baby shoes to compete in a market thay really don`t belong in. MB is pimping themselves too much just to stay in the market.

Even if not accepted by all a real MB, the A klasse was a real succes with up to
200 000 + units per year sold.
The A klasse is also one of the reasons/models that allowed Mb to stay ahead of BMW on sales for some years, since it took the X3 and 1 series (5-doors) combined to compensate for the A klasse sales.

I agree, but the reality of things is that MB needs to attract new young buyers as their main demographic source of income is slowly dying out.

Why don't they share parts with their brother in law aka Chrysler?

Because in that case all the development costs would still stay in the family. ;)

They need someone from outside to take a part of development & production burden.

Eg. Ford is a nice candidate for more trouble. :t-rot:

Seriously though...may be VW? Because as of right now, DCX and VW are already sharing components for their Van...why not extend the partnership to may be golf/A-klasse?

Yeah if you're into an A-class with a star on the grill and a golf interior.

I wouldn't mind that, I like the Golf's interior. ;)

But I doubt VW would do such a thing. In all of these partnerships, both companies have to get benefit out of the program. MB gets a development cost cut, but what does VW get out the program? I hardly doubt VW would use the sandwich platform for their all-important Golf platform, which underpins the majority of VW-badged models.

So who else would partner Daimler-Chrysler in their small-car program? A possible shortlist of candidates would possibly include Fiat, GM and Proton. Maybe even Toyota or Honda. But that's pretty far-fetched.

Actually, the Golf interior looks a bit better overall than the A-Class' IMO.:)

I have driven the A class and quite frankly Golf Plus has much better handling and brakes. The semi independent rear suspension of the A is a compromise when compared to Golf's multi-link one.

VW Golf may seem to be a good idea, considering that Dr Wolfgang Bernhard (VW brand boss) and Dr Dieter Zetsch (DCX boss) worked well together at Chrysler.

But take into account that the Golf will be replaced earlier than scheduled at 2008 and the A-Class would be expected to be replaced in 2011 (assuming a 7 year model cycle)

The only models that would coincide or are close to the A-class replacement dates are the Opel Astra (2010?) and, grasp! BMW 1 Series!!!!

The Golf VI is rather a Golf V evolution, not an entirely new product.
The 1 series is way too different from the A and B klasse. But the MINI (LWB Clubman) is actually more similar and should be replaced by 2011.
