Range Rover Sport New Range Rover Sport HST With Straight-Six Mild Hybrid and 395hp Revealed!!

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport, generally known as the Range Rover Sport, is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, later Jaguar Land Rover. The first generation (codename: L320) started production in 2005, and was replaced by the second generation Range Rover Sport (codename: L494) in 2013, which was replaced by the third generation Range Rover Sport (codename: L461) in 2022.

New Range Rover Sport HST Has A Straight-Six Mild Hybrid With 395hp
BY Brad Anderson | Posted on February 12, 2019

This is the new Range Rover Sport HST, the first production vehicle from Jaguar Land Rover to launch with a mild-hybrid powertrain.

Powering the Range Rover Sport HST is the all-new 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder gaasoline engine that boasts 395 hp and 405 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. The engine replaces the company’s V6 petrol and is special due to its implementation of an electric supercharger and a twin-scroll turbocharger.

Jaguar Land Rover says the electric supercharger is driven directly by an electric motor that can spool it up to 120,000 rpm in half a second. The presence of this electric supercharger is said to virtually eliminate all lag from the turbocharger. The new engine also reduces CO2 emissions over the petrol V6 by 12 per cent while cutting down on particulate emissions by 75 per cent.

In addition to the electric supercharger and efficient turbocharger, the Sport HST’s powertrain includes Continuous Variable Valve Lift (CVVL), a system that varies inlet valve timing and lift profile to improve efficiency. There is also a 48-volt system that can harvest energy on the move, provide torque assistance to the engine, and trigger the Start-Stop system.

The SUV has claimed fuel economy figures of 30.5 mpg (9.3 liters/100 km) combined and CO2 emissions of 213g/km.

“In-line six-cylinder engines are inherently better balanced than V6 designs and our all-new Ingenium unit builds on that promise to optimize efficiency in all operating conditions. Advanced features, including an electric supercharger, ensure distinctive Range Rover Sport performance and responses, while the intelligent MHEV system harvests energy to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions,” Jaguar Land Rover executive director of product engineering Nick Rogers said.

Sounds like same setup as Mercedes' I6 in the "53" models. Wonderful surprise.

But where did RR got that engine from?

It's there own engine built in Wolverhampton, the Ingenium range will have 3,4 & 6 cylinder models eventually. It's been in there road map for years and written about in a lot of publications.

Jaguar Land Rover expands Ingenium engine family with straight six-cylinder gasoline engine; MHEV 48V system; 20% more fuel efficient than outgoing V6

It think it will be a cracker in the F-Type.

Jaguar Land Rover is expanding its Ingenium engine family with a new six-cylinder gasoline engine designed and engineered in-house, and manufactured at its £1-billion Engine Manufacturing Centre (EMC) in Wolverhampton, UK.

The 3.0-liter straight six cylinder gasoline engine, which will debut on the Range Rover Sport, is available in 360PS and 400PS versions with torque capability of up to 495 and 550 N·m, is more responsive and better balanced than the outgoing V6 gasoline engine.

The new engine features a combination of an electric supercharger to deliver immediate response supported by a twin scroll turbocharger and Continuous Variable Valve Lift, which boosts power and help the engine to breathe with maximum efficiency.

These performance-boosting technologies, combined with Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology, optimizes performance, fuel economy and reduces emissions. The MHEV 48V system uses a small integrated electric motor to harvest energy lost during deceleration, and then intelligently redeploys it to assist the engine to maximize efficiency.

The in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine is 20% more fuel efficient (on the NEDC) than the V6 gasoline engine it replaces and is fitted with a Gasoline Particulate Filter, reducing particulate emissions by up to 75%.

I absolutely love it when a totally new engine is revealed, more so than a new car sometimes. Reading the specs is always interesting. That Land Rover has a brand new I6 puts something back right in the world. I can't wait to see this engine proliferate throughout the JLR empire. I read where the new V8 Velar is a one model year car, I wonder if a hi-po version of this I6 will replace the V8 and they'll change the designation to a true SVR? Love this new engine.

The Velar and Discovery need this new I6 asap as the V6 units are really unrefined and gruff during test drives.

Very interesting engine, nice to see Jaguar/Land Rover also returning to using inline 6 engines. The tech used is very similar to Mercedes M256 inline 6, but maybe in the near future Audi and BMW could also follow this route.

BMW doesn't want to follow. This tech is premature and surves only for the marketing. In five years IMO Mercedes will be as notorious with it as the first generation air suspension.

They are apparently in the process of acquiring the BMW V8 for use in larger engined models.

I don’t see the point in that. Jaguar has traditionally been a inline 6 manufacturer, a while back they announced the new I6 would be available in tunes up to 600hp.

When was the last time VAG had an inline 6???

It was around 1927 with the Audi Type M. Interestingly the first inline 6 was developed by Horch in 1910.

I think he means the mild hybrid and not the inline 6
