New rumors regarding SAAB + BMW

This time Victor Muller, at a lunch meeting with Fleet Street Motoring Group, announced that negotiations are held with several manufacturers regarding a partnership in supplies of parts like engines for small cars - in SAAB's case, the new 92.

Swedish AMS points out BMW as one of the main contendes and argues that the new FWD platform under development in Bayern would be suitable for the 92 project.

Report: Saab talking to BMW about using Mini platform for new 9-2

When Saab first showed the 9-X Biohybrid concept at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, it was expected to evolve into a production model based on General Motors' compact Delta architecture which forms the foundation of the Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze. Now that Saab is owned by Spyker Cars, CEO Victor Muller is reportedly looking for a new platform partner in Munich.

According to Swedish daily Dagens Industri, Saab is negotiating with BMW about getting access to the Mini architecture for a new 9-2 model to slot in underneath the 9-3. Before the teardrop-shaped runabout can become a reality, Saab needs to successfully launch both the 9-5 sedan and the 9-4x crossover.

There is no word yet on whether Muller is said to be in exclusive talks with BMW, or if Muller and Co. are in discussions with other automakers about supplying platforms and parts for the planned supermini. For its part, news agency Reuters quotes a unnamed BMW spokesman as saying "We are in talks with several interested parties who have interest in our technology... there are no contracts with Saab at the moment."

The 9-4x, which shares its platform with the Cadillac SRX, is expected to finally launch early next year. But for the model to be successful in Europe, it will need to have a diesel engine option, and Dagens Industri is also reporting that BMW could also provide engines options, although that could be more problematic. The 9-4x has a transverse mounted powertrain, but all of BMW's engines are longitudinally arrayed, which would require significant re-engineering.

I think this could work out very well, depending on what kind of arrangement they have.

Saab Confirms BMW Talks on Engine Supply, 2012 9-3 May be the First Model to Benefit from the Deal

A report from Bloomberg citing an unnamed person with direct knowledge of the matter said the first Saab to benefit from the proposed deal would be the next 9-3 model, due for release in 2012. According to the source, Saab will make use of a new 222-horsepower that BMW is developing and has not yet been introduced in any of the Bavarian automaker's cars. The same engine would find its way under the hood of the new 9-5.

The question is. Will any BMW model share any engines with Saab, or it will be like the Prince engine, that is shared with Peugeot, but is not used in BMW models?

From what I understand, the I4 engines in the next 1/3-series could well be PSA-engines.

I think the I3 engines will be BMW/PSA. The I4 engines are BMW engines, and these should be the ones SAAB's interested in.

My bad, I meant the I3 engines.

Other than the BMW/PSA engines, I don't know what BMW would share... or what SAAB could contribute.

Saab doesn't necessarily have to contribute something. It's merely another business field for BMW to sell engines and drivetrains. Looks like the deal with Carbon Motors on the 240,000 diesel engines was just the beginning.

Exactly. It's a great deal really. Make money without having to risk anything.

BTW, it will be made official on wednesday. Skyker shares up a lot today in Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

Add the benefit due to economy of scales, and it's an even better deal.

You have Spyker shares, Klier? :)

Good for bmw
Better for saab
But nothing unique in this deal..alot of manufacturers sell engines..

Great news for Saab. If they can get a hold of BMW's I6 they would really have fixed one of their biggest problems. Here in the U.S. that would be such a boon for them. Of course it will take some doing to get it to fit into a FWD layout.
