I reckon the designers got it spot on. original design, great proportion.

Citroen DS5
Citroën has revealed the eagerly anticipated third model in its innovative and distinctive DS line: Citroën DS5. Designed to express the full extent of Citroën's 'Créative Technologie', Citroën DS5 combines ground-breaking style, rewarding driving dynamics and exceptional refinement with innovative engineering solutions.

Citroën DS5 is the first Citroën model to feature HYbrid4 diesel hybrid technology, providing enhanced performance and class leading environmental credentials. The advanced HYbrid4 system delivers 200bhp; four-wheel drive capability; emission-free electric power for the city; and an acceleration boost function for the open road - with total CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

The DS line has already redefined expectations in the supermini segment with DS3, and combines the style of a coupé and the flexibility of a five-door hatchback with DS4. Progressing to the executive segment, Citroën DS5 targets customers looking for a truly bold and assertive car with a resolutely modern approach to vehicle design.

Based on the futuristic and magical C-SportLounge concept, DS5 bringstrue technological innovation to its class.

The dynamic exterior reflects a modern expression of status and promises enhanced driving pleasure. Flowing lines, a sleek profile and muscular wheel arches - which wrap themselves around the large (16" to 19") alloy wheels - give Citroën DS5 an undoubted air of refined confidence.

The assertive front end instantly identifies Citroën DS5 as a member of the DS family. There is an oversized air intake, a large chrome-finished grille housing the chevrons and a new LED light signature. A distinguishing feature, DS5 boasts chrome-finished 'sabre' inserts stretching from the top of each headlamp to the windscreen.

The rear design takes Citroën DS5's on-road presence to yet another level. The car stands firmly on wide tracks, emphasised by two tail pipes built into the rear bumper and highlighted by a rear signature featuring six light guides.

Citroën DS5 is equally charismatic inside, with a remarkable cabin fully consistent with the exterior styling. The driver-focused cockpit features a coupé-like driving position with a near-vertical steering wheel and a wide central console. Citroën DS5 instantly fires the imagination. An array of buttons, switches, scroll wheels and toggles are grouped on two central consoles, one low down and one above the driver's head, 'pilot-style'. A simple push on the START button brings the interior to life. The colour Head-Up Display projects essential information into the driver's line of sight and the ambient lighting bathes the cockpit in a heady mix of red and white.

Most importantly, Citroën DS5 benefits from Citroën's expertise in quality and refinement. Each detail has been carefully considered, with premium materials such as fine-grain Club leather and exclusive designs like the 'watchstrap' seat upholstery - a signature touch of the DS line that is unique to the market.

Reconciling fun at the wheel with comfort and practicality, Citroën DS5 opens up new horizons with pioneering architecture, including:

A sleek, compact body (4.52m long, 1.85m wide) and a driving position worthy of a Gran Turismo coupé.
A roomy boot (up to 465 litres VDA) reminiscent of a Sportwagon.
Five real seats, four doors and all the access and modularity of a hatchback.
For its motor show debut in Shanghai, DS5 appears in a one-off livery as the Citroën DS5 White Pearl. The cabin features ebony-coloured full-grain leather, contrasting subtly with silver-flecked overstitching. Interior detailing includes decorative inserts in Markassa ebony and a highly reflective fascia, created by applying several layers of lacquer. Citroën DS5 White Pearl also sports specially designed 20-inch alloy wheels.

The French premium auto maker is on the roll! IMO the styling is superb an the interior - with that stitched dash! SUPERB! The DS range could change Citroen forever.:t-cheers:

The switches for the electric windows are very poorly laid out on the centre console and that can be VERY annoying.

WOW....these French designs are just arresting. That is a really unique looking car, but in a good way. Take a little while to take in all the design details.

Someone left an aluminium hockey stick on top of the front fender.

Jokes aside, a part of me applauds Citroen for its DS range whilst another part of me just can't seem to reconcile with the overly ornate styling details. With the DS range, I get the overriding impression of style over substance and I'm every bit a substance kind of person.

I personally feel that this DS' styling is a step too far, a touch too daring and as a result will have (too) limited appeal.

Is it a concept or in production form?

It's a very bold design, which in my opinion, is not original french design. It should look elegant, rather than extravagant. Extravagance is an italian design characteristic.

Indeed, it's too much (style)...

Is it extravagant or avantgarde? ;)

Since avantgarde has always been French (particularly Citroen's) domain. At least on paper.

I really like these DS Citroens. :usa7uh: The styling is a bit over the top but then again Citroen has a history of extraordinary designs.

BTW is the diesel-hybrid the only powertrain choice?

I like it. Citroen nailed proportions/shape of the 2 box design. It is not awkward like other 2 box designs like BMW 5 GT, A5/A7 or Panamera. And at the same time it escapes being mini-van like, like the R class.

Every time I've driven a Citroen the ergonomics have left me completely flummoxed. Very neat looking car that - like all French cars - I could never make a serious part of my consideration set.

As expected or rather as we predicted ;)

3/5 Star Rating

It’s not very often a new car comes along that makes you shout out ‘wow’. But the Citroen DS5 isn’t like anything else on the road. It looks more like a one-off motor show concept than something you can buy.

The interior is even more dazzling than the exterior, plus it feels great – definitely Citroen’s best quality yet. Everything you touch oozes class: the dash is made from a material so soft that a passenger airbag probably isn’t necessary; the watch-strap-style ‘Club’ optional leather seats resemble those in a Ferrari and the solid metal door handles are like pieces of modern art.

The DS5 is cool – so cool that you want to fall in love with it. But will it break your heart? We found the Hybrid4 version flawed when we drove it in December 2011. Fortunately the diesel is much better. It’s quiet, smooth and, thanks to a nice spread of thrust, delivers strong performance. Economy and emissions impress, too.

It’s just a shame that the slick six-speed gearbox is the only part of the DS5 experience which will please keen drivers. The steering is so vague it feels as though the wheel is connected to the rack by a slinky spring, while the wallowy handing is no match for a Ford Mondeo, let alone cars like the BMW 3 Series, which the high price puts the DS5 in direct competition with.

Obviously, this being a Citroen, the trade-off is a ride as smooth as melted chocolate, right? Sadly not. Even though the car feels softly sprung, the suspension crashes over bumps.

If you spend most of your time on the motorway, none of this will be an issue. However, in the cold light of a daily commute, the novelty of the DS5 soon wears off – and what you thought was love turns out to be lust.

There is a reason road cars don’t look like concepts: the design on the outside demands compromises inside. And you’ll soon become irritated by the Citroen’s limited rear headroom, split back window, awkward button layouts, tiny glovebox and useless cup-holders.

When you drive something with less ‘wow’ factor – like a Volkswagen CC – you realise something the Germans have known for ages: boring works. :t-cheers:

^ A shame that so much effort has been put into making it look right inside/out that they had run out of ideas as to how to make it drive well too. I must say when I first saw it I fall in love as did the wife though for us it's boot is totally impractical.

NEWLY-ELECTED FRENCH PRESIDENT SELECTS DS5 AS OFFICIAL CAR

In a lot of countries a new president generally means a new presidential ride. France is no exception and a report published by Europe 1 indicates that the newly-elected Socialist president François Hollande has picked a Citroën DS5 as his official car.

his marks a break from the armored Renault Vel Satis that was regularly used by Nicolas Sarkozy, the outgoing right-wing president, during the five years that he was in office.
Hollande has reportedly chosen the eco-friendly HYbrid4 variant of the DS5. It mixes a 163 horsepower four-cylinder HDi turbodiesel engine with a 37 horsepower electric motor that is mounted on the rear axle.
The DS5 HYbrid4 carries a base price of €43,000 ($55,000) but the presidential model will cost a little more. A final set of specifications has yet to be released but several sources indicate that it will be fitted with a big sunroof, a feature not available on run-of-the-mill DS5 models.
Hollande’s first outing in the DS5 is scheduled to take place on May 15th, 2012, when he officially takes the reigns of France from Sarkozy.
The president’s choice will give Citroën an absolutely massive amount of publicity. The DS5 will be featured on numerous television stations and pictures of it will illustrate countless articles published all around the world. Analysts from the advertising world estimate that if Citroën wanted to buy that kind of publicity, it would have to shell out a whopping €10 million ($12.9 million).
François Hollande is not the first French president to choose a Citroën as his official car. René Coty used a Traction 15/6 H Limousine, Charles de Gaulle favored a DS, George Pompidou rode around in a specially-built four-door SM while Jacques Chirac started his 12-year long presidency in a CX and ended it in a C6.
