Thanks all. I am still getting used to the clusterf#ck of a UX. Will share a more informed opinion once I have figured all the modes/options.
But here is my early opinion -

The good stuff -
  • Beneath all the gimmicks, the car is a honest to good car. It goes/turns/slows when you ask it to, where you ask it to, how much you ask it.
  • It is not light on its feet like GT3/4 (obviously), but more of a brute like that GTR that bearhugs the road into submission.
  • You know it is heavy, but it is not like you feel the weight in some some part of it like you feel the heavy nose in a heavy ICE sedan/suv. Instead it feels like one solid mass.
  • The ride feels quite good so far. You can even use the hardest setting for almost everything around here except the really broken roads.
  • If I didn’t mention it, it is fast!
  • For < 60k that it cost us, I can't think of many cars, let alone practical family cars that come close to how capable and fun it is, EV or not...
The gimmicks -
  • The fake shifts, works really well. I bet if you didn't know beforehand, you would think there was a real DCT transmission.
  • The fake sound - when you first turn on the fake sound, you are very aware it is fake, but 2 mins into it, it feels more natural. They went with turbo 4 cylinder (apparently from one of the other N cars), so not the greatest sound.
  • In the end, both combined works. It adds the texture and tactility that we associate with performance driving back into the mix.

The interior -
  • The N specific stuff - the steering and bucket seats are nice. Rest, carried over from basic Ioniq 5 is whatever - like the center console is very minivan-ish.
  • Materials - most prominent areas are covered in leather with deviated stitching. But if you dig around, lot of cheap stuff, At the same time, I sat in a RS3 (same base price) and it has way more cheaper stuff, so for 60k, this is as good as it gets.
  • Except for the climate controls, everything else is real buttons. No haptic/touch crap.
  • The bucket seats hold you nicely without being a torture to get in and out of like the Porsche ones.

The sucky parts -
  • Range downright sucks - claim 220 miles, but if you drive like it is meant to be, probably more like 180 miles. Not important for what we got the car for - local use. But not ideal for road trips. But charging rate is really good - will charge to 80% in ~20 mins.
  • The UX is a clusterf#ck. There are gazzilion different modes and settings and navigating them is a maze.
Congratulations, it looks great in red.
They actually call it something Orange, but yea it is close to red.

Thanks for the review. The car is a banger! Good to know that the shifts are convincing. 220 range is low but if you average journey is well bewel 100miles than it doesn't matter.

Wow, that looks great in that colour! Congratulations to you and your wife. I've only ever seen this in the press light blue.

I'm amazed this is your first EV. I thought you had a Tesla?

Unless we go on a roadtrip, almost everything we do is within 60 miles.

We had rental Teslas few times, but never owned one.

Congrats mate!

My wife really wants this car as well. She says it's her clear favorite right now, specifically the N version!

How'd you get it for over $60K, especially here in the Bay Area?

I remember a few months back dealers were slapping $20K mark ups on these. Glad to see that's no longer the case.

We got ~2k discount from the dealer without even trying + Hyundai offers 7.5k off for leasing (which is what we did). If I pressed harder I could have probably got 3k off, but I hate haggling. If you want the similar deal, let me know I can refer you our sales person, she was good (which seems to be a rarity with Hyundai dealerships). I think they have a white one too in stock (which was my preference, but wife wanted orange).

Maybe there was a mark up earlier, but not any longer. I doubt there is a big market for 60k+ Hyundais. Most people are stuck on brands at that price point.

Congratulations to the Mrs on the orange Cheeto 😂
Now, like Matt Farah said, if only you can download and use other sounds like the GT3's
