911 (993) Porsche Project Gold - 70th Anniversary 993 Turbo

The Porsche 911, internally type 993, is the fourth generation of the 911 model of Porsche sports car, manufactured and sold between 1994 and 1998 (model years 1995–1998 in the United States), replacing the 911, type 964. Its discontinuation marked the end of air-cooled 911 models.

Porsche are probably miffed about Singer's growing success in restoring old 911. At Pebble Beach on the 24th of August Porsche will unveil a restomodo 993 Turbo.

Interesting very interesting indeed. I guess Porsche must be highly impressed what Singer have done with these modern tech rebuilds/restorations that they think it's a good business plan for the future.

It’s about time OEMs enter this segment. They have the capabilities and a trusted brand. If you look at the future of cars these highly customized, mechanical cars will be a profitable market space. I would hope more manufacturers enter it. Ferrari is thinking about it, Porsche is doing it, Maserati should, The Americans could do the same (Ford, Chevrolet, Jeep).

Singer had a huge presence at Goodwood with 4 cars and the engine on a grand display. They are clearly not struggling for business. The 993 is the holy grail of modern Porsche cars and I'm extremely curious about what improvements Porsche have made to the air cooled engine.

Let's take a moment and remind ourselves of how lust-worthy the 993 Turbo is.

I prefer my 993s' "straight" (no ice, no garnish, not mixed with Red Bull, no cocktail umbrella).

I too like it vanilla, but it's one of the few 911s that looks astonishingly good in Turbo guise. With the 991 I like it best in Carrera S form.

Yes-my personal 991 (.2) favorites are the Carrera 4S and the GT3 Touring Package. The 1852mm in width "wider bodies".

...not that I don't appreciate the relative simplicity and purity of the 991 Carrera (1808mm) narrow-bodies. Preferably in a pale non-metallic grey or off-white...with an oxblood or terracotta leather interior.

It's amazing how well the 911 (past/present) is thriving at it's best right now despite a new generation being around the corner and competition from the rivals being at their best to date.

I got my 993 at a good time because values are begining to rebound quick after the market softened over the past year or so.

Do you drive it much?

I've been shooting for once a week to get the juices flowing. It's a car you really have to prepare yourself (physically and mentally) to drive - very racuous... feels like you sitting an inch from the ground, you hear every single component working, steers like a dart, and the flat six is the bassist engine I've experienced. A 991 feels like a big luxury cruiser in comparison.

Incredibly rewarding, nevertheless and it's a car I'm still learning to master. After decent distance drive it almost feels like you've just completed a sparring session. Beats you up, but feels good.

Madre del Dios! That's a looker! I swear, you have one of the best taste in cars I've seen, understated yet worthwhile machineries.

I've said before that the 928 is what got me interested in Porsche as a brand. What got me interested in 911's were the 993 Turbo. I still remember those Porsche 911 Turbo ads in magazines like they were yesterday. "Portable amusement park," indeed.

I agree. They pulled this off perfectly. Marketing, product, brand, classic, all go perfectly hand in hand.
I guarantee you that this segment will become more and more important. Not only for the brand but also to add a bit of revenue to the bottom line.

It’s not really a competitor to a Singer, this is just a thoroughly restored 911, the Singer is something else altogether. With Singers collaboration with Williams it makes them even more special.
