GT-R Sport Auto - New Nissan GT-R lap on the Nordschleife

The Nissan GT-R (Gran Turismo–Racing; model code: R35) is a series of cars built by Nissan from 2007 to 2025. It has a 2+2 seating layout and is considered both a sports car and a grand tourer. The engine is front-mid mounted and drives all four wheels. It succeeds the Nissan Skyline GT-R, a high-performance variant of the Nissan Skyline. The car is built on the PM platform, derived from the FM platform used in the Skyline and Nissan Z models. Production is conducted in a shared production line at Nissan's Tochigi plant in Japan.

So the new model is 4 seconds faster than the previous one, but it's still far from factory's 7.20-min-claim.

Just for comparison (HvS's times):
7.33 min - Porsche 911 GT3 RS mk2
7.34 min - Nissan GT-R 2011
7.38 min - Ferrari 458 Italia
7.38 min - Corvette ZR1
7.39 min - Ferrari 430 Scuderia
7.40 min - Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
7.40 min - Porsche 911 GT3 mk2

Wow, already? What is the 997.2 Turbo/Turbo S time?

As for not matching 7:20, I don't think anyone reasonable expects HVS to match Suzuki's time, but the 4 sec improvement is not far off the 6 sec improvement in factory times.

Yes, Sport Auto is the first magazine in the world to test the new GT-R on the Ring. :D

@ Turbo / S: no time yet from Sport Auto.
Only AutoBild Sportscars' 7.41 for the Turbo S (on the full, 20,8 km-layout). :usa7uh:

Despite the very powerful engine, the old 996 chassis of the Porsche is definitely showing its age next to the splendid machinery that the GTR is.

Time for the 991!!!

No, I mean 996.

The 997 is merely a heavy FL of the 996 with the same overall chassis, only updated.

It even goes as far as sharing the exact same roof panel as the 996.

I will watch with interest, how this whole '7:20 factory predicted time vs the rest' debate plays out. I remember when Nissan first posted it's 'official' time for the original R35 GTR to claim of BS from Porsche and how it snowballed into an internet frenzy. It split forums into two camps of thought with totally differing opinions, one side believing that though the time was incredible it was actually witnessed by the invited press and was indeed factually true and the other saying that thought, well yes the time achieved did happen, but claimed like Porsche that it wasn't the same car that could be bought on the street and they argument was the fact no one else got tantalizingly close to the official time. This latest attempt to improve on this time if successful will only add fuel to the fire and send this often heated debate to the forefront once again.

Frankly it's up to the individual to decide which is true and which is false, either way Nissan have achieved what they set out to do, which was give the GTR as much media attention at possible since it's launch and reaffirm it's cult status which it had, in spades and this latest media stunt will continue the GTR's globel interest.

My god thats a kick ass time..faster than the Italia even..

And yeah that 7:20 time is of no interest at all..

Porsche focus more on finesse and driving experience rather than being fixated on ring time.

That sounds a little too complacent and dismissive of what Nissan has accomplished (even reports that driving the updated GTR is a more visceral experience). I can understand your point as it relates to straight line performance however.

Don't worry you will be reading more of that.
Thank goodness for the Japanese otherwise we will be paying so much for cars.

and so far from prev. factory's 7.26:7-min-claim :D

That may be true, but was it not Porsche who actually caused a stink about Nissan's claimed Ring lap time. If they weren't fixated on ring times, then they would have turned a blind-eye to Nissan's claims, ...but as we witnessed, quite the opposite occurred.

So, it's a tad inaccurate to convey this notion that Porsche always take the high-road. Being compared-to by competitors comes with the territory of being the class-leader/benchmark.

If you bother to read the comparisons, most of them prefer the way GTR drives over 911 Turbo. Of course GT3 is more rewarding, but it is a different cup. As for being fixated on ring time, Porsche has played it's part in making ring times the defacto dick measuring contest for sports cars instead of the stupid 0-60 times and thank god for that.

The factory never claimed a journalist would lap 7:26 in just a few laps.

Porsche for sure cares about what Nissan are doing on the 'Ring. The public accusation that Nissan cheated is fairly unprecedented, especially to the extent that they bought a sample and tried (but failed) to duplicate the time. Then we have reports that the GT2 RS targeted Nissan's GT-R time with the so-called project 727.

Not too concerned about the pricing aspect. Nissan admitted to losing money on the GT-R and no doubt the special limited editions Spec V and Egoist are designed to return some of their investment. In the marketplace in terms of sales, Porsche is still the winner. Which makes their paranoid and childish tantrum all the more bizarre, IMO.

Absolutely brilliant. Hates off to Nissan. Gt-R is by far the best machine ever to come from Japan!! :usa7uh:
