It is good to see there are some signs of life left in the design studio. Great looking concept, and hopefully the theme of this design will transfer to the next generation of Legacy/Liberty.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept coming to Tokyo Motor Show

The Advanced Tourer Concept is an evolution of Subaru’s Hybrid Tourer Concept that was unveiled at the Tokyo show two years ago.

Subaru has refined the design of its Tourer concept, potentially suggesting the Japanese manufacturer is preparing it for production.

Earlier this year, Fuji Heavy Industries – the manufacturer of Subaru vehicles – confirmed it would have a hybrid model on the market within the next five years. It has given no confirmation of exactly what type of car the production hybrid will be.

The Advanced Tourer Concept is 4580mm long, 1840mm wide and 1430mm tall, making it 210mm shorter, 40mm wider and 185mm lower than the Subaru Outback
It is powered by a 1.6-litre horizontally opposed direct-injection turbocharged Boxer engine which works in tandem with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Subaru says the powertrain will offer drastically improved efficiency and will include a full EV mode for zero-emissions driving.

The Advanced Tourer Concept incorporates Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

Inside, the concept features a large monitor on the steering wheel that gives the driver access to maps, television and the internet. The concept also scores Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist safety system and a glass panel roof.

The Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept will debut alongside the Subaru BRZ sports coupe at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of this month.

There's the big news right there: horizontally opposed (flat 4) Boxer 1.6 litre direct injection turbo. Man, I hope this translates into a return to WRC.

Or will this engine eventually find its way into the BRZ?

WTF? Front looks sooooo much like an Audi!!
Subaru used to own the hexagonal grill and thankfully the designers have realized their recent mistakes and now they are bring it back. But yes the rest of the front have a very strong Audi look to it, I don't mind it, I am just happy that Subaru is finally giving us something pleasant to look at.

Andreas Zapatinas set Subaru back enormously with his ill-conceived shield-grill departure from a simpler, more cohesive design language that was just starting to gain momentum with the previous generation Legacy. As Monster points out, Subaru had previously embarked on the hexagonal grill styling direction that was just taking shape, whereupon Zapatinas' appointment this direction was canned for something rather incoherent and contrary to the brand identity Subaru wishes to portray.

Now, they've tried to regain this lost momentum and instead of owning a rather attractive and distinctive frontal aspect design, Subaru are now sucking hind tit to Audi and Hyundai. What an unnecessary setback.

I was more talking about the headlights actually!

Yes, again, very similar to the now-established faceted design of Audi's headlights. Of course, these are closer to old Legacy's "hawk-eyes" than are Audi's to their old trapezoidal lights.

I suppose there are only certain headlight shapes that can work with the hexagonal grill.

Still one of the best looking sedan/wagon design around.

Yeah, but not only the front. Look at the rear lights and rear window...

And also look at the current Kia Cadenza... Looks just like an Audi to.

Anyways, this car is really cool!

I am most excited about the 1.6l H4 Turbo. This engine could find its place in the up coming WRX which according to the rumours would be based on the BRZ. I think for in two years there'll be some engine swap to do for me.

1.6l because Subaru wants to return to WRC (with Ken Block :D).

Those rumours - which I've heard none of - are far fetched. The GT86-BRZ platform is unique in the range and will not form the basis of any other Subaru. Subaru will continue to pursue symmetrical AWD for its international range of passenger cars and the future WRX and STI - whilst being separated from the Impreza moniker in name - will still make substantial use of said's construction and engineering. Because they'll both still be AWD there'll be no platform synergies with BRZ.

My expectation (I'm in the dark now with Subaru future developments as my contact has moved to another brand) is that Subaru are certainly readying a 1.6T Boxer for the future WRX but a part of me doubts that this engine will be used in the STI. The turbo 4 1.6 litre engine is set to become ubiquitously applied across the entire industry for warm to middling performance cars. We'll see it not only in familiar applications like PSA-MINI-BMW but soon in new Renaults, Hyundai-Kias, Nissans and of course Subarus.

I don't think however that the engine will be strong enough for application in the STI, in which case it would be logical to me for Subaru to rather develop the 2.0L FB20 dual injection engine for turbocharged application in the forthcoming STI. Current owners of the 195 kW WRX are bound to be disappointed as I would be very, very surprised if the new 1.6T Boxer puts out more than 165kW (225 bhp) in the new Rex.

Right, so here's the new FB16(?) Direct Injection Turbo 1.6 litre Boxer engine. Very smart.

It'll be interesting to see which models this unit is earmarked for and what its upper end power output capabilities will be.

is the DI tech sourced from Toyota or self-developed? And it looks like Subie is fully committed to CVT for the long-haul.

And this is what the Legacy should been all along. While this is more conceptual than their previous Legacy concept or Impreza concept, I'm hoping the transition into production will be able to preserve the essence. I'm sure they will tone down the wheel arch flares.

By the way, this is JDM-perfection right here:

Shame this wasn't available State-side.

Is this new 1.6l H4 Turbo based on the FB16? If yes so then this (sort) is going to be the engine of the WRX, and I would say the WRX STI would get a similar engine based on FB20. As for the BRZ STI, no indeed it will never get any turbo engine, but a swap will surely be possible.
Oh, and yes the WRX is going to be a hole new model just as the BRZ.
BRZ= NA+RWD
WRX= FI+AWD

WRX will be seperated from the Impreza just like how the GT-R was seperated from the Skyline.
