S-Class W222 (W222) Active Bonnet Triggered

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).

Autobahn Newbie
Hi Guys,

just got my brand new S400, and have a little question.

Apparently my Active Bonnet has been triggered due to a big dog jumping infront of my car.
Auto-Brake was engaged, and the active bonnet triggered, so it jumped out.
Now i get an "Active Bonnet Malfunction" error.

I was wondering if the system is a one time go? I mean after it's triggered, do i need to replace the actuator pushing the bonnet up?
I've been to the workshop and they ask an outrageous price saying it must be replaced.
can't it just be reset via the system computer?

Thanks ahead

Really? I haven't had the same experience. But I suspect you'd have to visit your dealer to have the actuators replaced as they are pyrotechnic devices that cannot be reset.

Outrageous price? Aren't you in warranty of some sort?

No warranty on a one-time-system that been triggered.

And about that video, I believe that's the E class. I think the new s class has a different system.
Anyways they asking for around 1200$ for two actuator and labor. Legit?

P.S. My friend had same situation with bonnet on his E coupe.
He just close it and go on. :) He didn't replace anything.
I guess in that case you will have no more active bonnet, just regular.

I will argue that the system was activated unintended, and claim it on warranty.

that's what i tried, but they won't accept it.

I DIDN'T actually hit the dog. I saw the dog in the last second as it was running to the road and hit the brakes hard PLUS the car auto-braked or tightened the brakes, i could feel it in the brake pedal, and then the bonnet activated.

other than that, after the bonnet activated, i saw the dog flee.. so IT IS actually a "misfire" of the system thinking it was a pedestrian.. obviously a dog doesn't need an active-bonnet protection.

i don't mind not having the active bonnet again, i think i just need to reset the system to get that annoying error message out my clusters.

What did the dealer say, the car has no damage what so ever, clearly the bonnet didn't need to be deployed.

how do i erase the error? it says ACTIVE BONNET MALFUNCTION. SEE OWNER'S MANUAL

I don't know exactly. Maybe you have described in owner's manual, maybe you need to go to service and reset error on diagnostics.
Some errors can be erased alone, but you need to know procedure for individual error, and they can vary for some model if it is couope or sedan, facelift etc, they are not always same, also hidden gems for instance.
Maybe if you know some servicer, he can tell you.
If don't, here we go to service, erase error on diagnostics and that's it.
They don't charge anything for that, for known customers.

@yaniv
Here we have "kulanz" ( german word which means obligingness ), that mean when you have no warranty more, they can accept some things and replace it with no charge.
Maybe @Wolfgang can explain this better than me, but some sort of extended warranty ( for free ).
For instance, they replaced me SBC on my W211 and car was about 5 years old then, no warranty, for free, even If I don't have any problem with SBC, but just to ensure, for every case...
