911 (997) Winding Road Magazine Review- Porsche 997 GT3 RS

The Porsche 997 is the sixth generation of the Porsche 911 sports car manufactured and sold by the German automobile manufacturer Porsche. It was sold between 2004 (for the 2005 model year) and 2013.
Nice but I dont really see the point of the RS
Same engine and 100lbs lighter

I suppose the RS is just the complete nutter version, although in all honesty could not see my self buying the RS when i could have the standard GT3 which is already pretty awesome.

Now Porsche says the GT3RS is 20kg (40lbs) lighter than the standard GT3 (1395kg vs 1375kg),

When both vehicles are fully loaded with a 68kg driver and featuring ceramic brakes the standard GT3 weighs 1440kg and the GT3RS 1428kg, 12kg difference (26.4lbs)

Lighter flywheel, thinner plastic rear window, carbon-fibre wing for optimum downforce, rollcage...

The GT3 RS is the car that allows for mortals like us to drive across Europe to the 'Ring, hand the keys to uncle Walter and see him smash a quick little 7:42 just for the hell of it. This car is too hot.

By the way, have you seen the black colour combo with fiery orange GT3 RS decals and wheels? :icondrool Hotter still.

I'm not denying it's awesome :usa7uh: I'm sure it is an even better performance car than the GT3 (which is saying a lot, because the GT3 is already bloody amazing)

P.S. i knew the 996 GT3 RS had a different fly wheel from the standard 996 GT3, but i didn't know the 997 GT3 RS had a different fly wheel, thanks for the info.

I have seen the black paint with the orange decals, it does indeed looks awesome.

:t-cheers:

Im wondering why they didn't use a 3.8L engine which is newer, than the 3.6L engine. Would the weight gain negate the power gain?

Don't forget the extra ~1.5 inches from the C4 bodywork :usa7uh:

Well, if memory serves me it is because the 3.6L is essentially straight from Porsche's racing program. This means it has features like dry-sump lubrication which IIRC is missing from the 3.8.

Probably so, especially when you have to consider engine vibration and the chasis balancing if you have to keep weight in check.

The point is to get the wider bodywork (for wider tires), the flywheel, the plastic windows/thinner glass and mostly the new front suspension homologated for racing. All these things are missing from the regular GT3 and with the RS these parts will be legal to use in many race series.

The 3.6 is a racing engine design while the 3.8 is a street engine design. The 3.6 in the turbo and the GT3 is not the same 3.6 in the Carrera. The 3.6 turbo/GT3/GT2 is the same block from the 1996-1998 GT1. I have posted more about this in GT1 threads in the past if you want to search them.

Slightly OT drronh: You're buying a Viper Diamondback???

:t-cheers:

I gave the dealer a deposit when I got my truck. If they ever make it, I'll be first on the list, if the dealer here gets one. Time will tell, but like the GT3 RS I'll be in a good position if its made.

I will search for the article and read more about the engines. I though Porsche only had one 3.6l engines. BTW what's the production date for your GT3RS and which options did you pick.
