Question for soccer savvy people, isn't there a better system than penalty shootout to settle ties?
This question comes up every time somone's favourite team loses on penalties. Amusingly, the winners are usually happy with the system and the losers aren't. I have seen the English press complaining about penalties being an unfair way to lose when they won the previous game on penalties and they didn't complain about winning that way.

My personal view is that both sides know in advance a result is required on the night and there will be penalties after 120 minutes of play. If a side don't like the penalty lottery then win the damn game in the first 120 minutes!

The stoppage time is my only complaint as someone who doesn't watch the sport regularly. It just seems like they put up some arbitrary number for added play.

IIRC the stoppage time rule was revised after the Champions League Final in 99 where Man U scored two goals in extra time on Bayern Munich to win it. After that game extra time is more closely monitored and put up on a board as you see today. Many say that that CL final was manipulated to give Man U as much time as possible to score on Bayern. The introduction of the extra time table showing decreases the possibility of manipulation. But it is still dependent on what the ref thinks (or is paid) to do as we saw in the 1 min extra time added in the USA game. 1 min after 90 minute is almost impossible.

@donkeykong i know im going way off topic here, so sorry guys, but i just noticed your avatar, are u sad lebron is leaving Miami back to Cleveland?

It just seems too luck based... why don't they make the 2 teams play during the extra time with out a goal keeper? That way someone will probably score and will still be more skill based than a penalty shootout?
What we tend to forget in the US is that these guys have been running back and forth on the field for two hours. So penalties are there to just get the game over with.
Anyone know the longest penalty shoot out?

I myself think the offside rules should be relaxed or something. Golden goals are always lost to it. And the fake injury acting should stop.

You always want to have the best player in the world play for your favorite team,so I was bit shocked initially. I did not think he would return to the cavs with the roster as it stands and of course want to play for Dan Gilbert again. I guess trying to win one for his hometown supersedes all that, and I actually think it's a noble move on his part. So I'm not too down on how it played out we got 2 out 4 cause of Bron and if anyone can turn things around again,it has to be Pat Riley. For the rest, sorry for the off topic.

Yea its very weird how the nba just let this pass, i remember back when chris paul signed a deal with the lakers, the nba vetoed it. But lets face it its already done and now the Cleveland cavaliers are a championship contender, just because of one player "lebron james" the best player in the world today. Yes they have kyrie irving, varegao, and andrew wiggins, but with lebron now the cavs are in another level, and they are not cutting back like they did before, they will do whatever it takes to turn this team around, they will turn this squad around for lebron benefits. Wow lets see the great popovich can do now lol.

Pat riley is a genius man they will recover asap.

Sorry again for the off topic.

Cheering up for Germany here... Hey, just because Germany humiliated Brazil on the semi finals doesn't mean we hate germans! Its just the opposite! Germans are awesome!
