A Lotus Omega as fast as an M5? A trick should make it possible!
With a top speed of 283 km / h, the Lotus Omega is one of the fastest production sedans of the 90s. What Opel did not reveal: The Brachial Limo should even crack the 300 very easily!

Since almost 30 years, the Lotus Omega the most powerful production Opel of all time. In 1991, the Rüsselsheim-based company built shoulder to shoulder with Lotus a projectile that got 377 hp and 568 Nm of torque from a 3.6-liter in-line six-cylinder . In addition to the Alpina B10 Biturbo , the Über-Omega (283 km / h top speed) was one of the fastest production sedans in the world at the time. But apparently he can go even faster - even crack 300! At least that's what a YouTube video from TheSupercardriver say

On par with a current BMW M5 Competition

Background: The stated Vmax of the Lotus Omega is supposedly limited. You should be able to remove this limitation with a simple trick: Simply turn the engine in fifth gear into the red range and only then shift into sixth gear. Then the electronic restraint should apparently be lifted and the Omega can reach a real 305 km / h . This means that the 30-year-old Opel would be as fast as a current BMW M5 Competition with M Driver's Package! The video only explains the trick, however, it does not provide any proof of the top speed achieved. So you would have to test yourself whether the trick works. But who wants to torment a 60,000 euro classic car like that? Especially since the Lotus Omega / Lotus Carlton (the British version from Vauxhall), which were only built 1000 times, are not exactly known for their stability.

This car would be the antithesis of everything preached by Colin Chapman's motto of "add lightness", but then again Chapman was a businessman first, so obviously Mr. Chapman would gladly accept the General's generous offer to tune the humble Opel Omega GSI 3000 24v into a BMW M5 fighter.

Looking at this video, it looks like this car is definitely capable of at least 280km/h or more. Its hitting 300km/h on the clock. Quite good acceleration despite a manual box.

If the power curve from the AMS test is correct, it delivers more than 99 percent of its max HP from 4800-6000 rpm so either the 5th gear isn't too short for top speed or the speedometer is not very precise. I suspect they were driving about 270 km/h.

From Autocar's November 28, 1990 test:

Top speed? Our true speed was a ‘mere’ 163.6mph before it became imperative to slam on the Carlton’s almighty anchors.
Make no mistake, the Carlton will go faster than that: it was still accelerating with the promise of at least another 10mph to come.
Exactly how much faster will have to remain unknown for now, there being no available facility in this country for top speeds seriously past 160mph.
