Mercedes-AMG Wants Its Future Cars to Pass the 'Batman Test'
Execs say coming AMGs will be edgier, segment-leading, and more "kickass" than ever.

We are Batman, we are not Superman because Superman is a little bit like the nice son-in-law,” says Michael Schiebe, the board member for Mercedes-AMG who is working to make the luxury brand distinct from Mercedes in addition to being a leader among performance brands.
“Batman is the one who is too dangerous for your daughter,” says Schiebe. “We want to be the dangerous son-in-law,” he says, a little rough, not perfect. Batman has become the measuring stick during strategy sessions with the product team every Monday. “When new product is being planned, we ask ‘is this Batman enough?’”
AMG customers don’t want to buy a Mercedes, Schiebe says. An AMG must be more aggressive and look more high performance. AMG was successful when it was edgy. The plan is to do it again, but on steroids, with killer design and segment-beating performance.
The brand has an onslaught of new models coming in the next three years. “We have never launched so many products in the history of AMG,” says Schiebe. He wants to sell 200,000 AMGs a year. To do so, each model needs to be better than the competition. Some of that is more horsepower with combustion engines as more markets will rely on them for years to come. Mercedes will launch a new family of V-8 engines next year that are more powerful as well as efficient to meet global emissions requirements.
AMG also sees growing demand for high-performance EVs, for the drive experience as well as regulations. Some cities only allow EVs in their city core, so AMG needs to offer an alternative.
Breaking Records, Creating Expectations
The 1,340-hp Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept recently went to the Nardo Ring in Italy where it smashed 25 EV records, driving the equivalent of a lap around the Earth’s equator.
Taking the electric concept around the world in less than eight days at Nardo wasn't just a publicity stunt, it was a test of AMG technology which will go into production in the road-going model “sooner than you think,” said Mercedes-Benz chairman and CEO Ola Källenius. We will see the production version of the four-door super sedan next year and it will be kickass, he says. The production car looks even better than the concept and “has the heart of an AMG.”
It will be the first model built on the new AMG.EA architecture and its prowess shows AMG is on the right path, says Schiebe. It showcases the tech coming, signals that future products can beat the competition on the track, and is a morale booster for the team.
High-Tech AMG SUV Coming
The same tri-motor powertrain, with axial-flux motors, will also go into a high-performance electric SUV that is already undergoing testing. We will see the SUV and get more details next year, Schiebe tells us. Its launch will be less than a year after the GT since the basic work and underpinnings are shared and therefore will be done.
The axial flux motors were developed for the AMG.EA electric vehicle platform by British-based Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Yasa Ltd. But the automaker will want to scale up production of the motors, which means spreading it to the Mercedes brand. We should see this in the near term, says Chief Technology Officer Markus Schäfer.
