The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, is a series of full-sized luxury sedans and coupés produced by Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for Mercedes-Benz, being positioned above the other Mercedes-Benz models.
I think the Maybach GLS looks terrible and not a good representation for the Maybach sub-brand. Then again, I'm not crazy about the GLS' aesthethics and how it doesn't live up to the "S-Class of SUVs" as it was implied.
Regarding the V12, it makes sense in this vehicle, but outside of ME, I don't think the take-rate is all that high to justify putting a V12 in it. What is the ratio of V8 to W12 for the Bentayga? I think the V8 purchases significantly outnumbers the W12, and that may have been what tipped them to just stick with a V8.
In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a
sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale
version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
