From official press release:
Applying that same flexible platform and PHEV technology, activities will also commence to prepare Pomigliano to produce an Alfa Romeo compact UV.

A FIAT 500X underpinned Alfa or something RWD?

It will be natively FWD and more importantly, it will not be riding on an as-is version of the current platform. It is fair to call the underpinnings of this upcoming vehicle SUSW 2.0.

Yes, most likely it's a highly evolved version of a Small Wide platform. Preparation for production will take more than 18 months. The most important sharing is for a P1P4 PHEV arhitecture which will debut on Jeep Renegade and will be used on Jeep Compass. Jeep Compass PHEV will be produced in Melfi together with Renegade and 500X. Alfa's compact SUV will not share production facility.

hmmm....i thought the Giorgio platform was scalable for compact applications and that it Alfa was planning on using that for the basis of all their new cars.

They can do it but it would place them in a bad position compared to a German trio. Cost structure and interior room for a compact RWD car is not good.

X1 has become a cash vow for BMW since switch to a FWD platform. Much cheaper to build compared to a 3er with similar price.

So for me this call from FCA CEO and EMEA COO is a logical one.

Valid points, I just hope the perception by potential customers isn't that the folks at FCA and Alfa cheaped out. A lot is riding on Alfa's success with a product like this. Is the successor to the Giulietta also following suit or are they still sticking with a shorter Giorgio platform?

I think they’re going Giulia even though it’s quite expensive. But then it’ll be the only RWD platform based car in the segment.

That would be very unique as many compact crossovers are FWD and don't have multi link rear suspension unless you opt for AWD or large engines.

We'll see. Jeep Compass is a base or the most similar car. Of course Alfa will be more evolved in both platform and suspension department.

For development is responsible R&D center in Torino. They are responsible for development of every Small Wide based car including Jeep models.
FCA have announced PHEV development for both Jeep Compass and compact Alfa SUV. It's a P1P4 PHEV arhitecture with e-axle. 1.3 turbo engine and
electric motor at the rear axle for total power of around 250 HP.

Giulietta was not present in the latest plans except for a major revision of the current one. But IMO there is no business case behind a RWD compact hatchback. With a switch to a FWD we could see one in the future.

Most premium crossovers have multilink rear suspension. AFAIK Jag E-Pace, BMW models and new Audi Q3 all have multilink rear suspension. Mercedes will most likely break this trend.

All FCA SUV models on Small Wide platform have an independent rear suspension but it's not a multilink. They are using McPherson rear suspension. But it uses a lot of vertical space so I'm expecting that Alfa Romeo will switch to a multilink.

Unfortunately the following video is in Italian. FCA COO for EMEA region is talking about future products FCA products from Italy in 2019-2021. He mentioned a lot of products including Jeep Renegade and Compass PHEV, restyling for a Giulia and Stelvio with PHEV and Maserati D SUV from the same factory, PHEV for current Maserati products, new Fiat 500 BEV.
They will keep production in Modena where they will introduce future Alfa and Maserati specialty models.

And at the very end he spoke about future Alfa Romeo compact SUV. He described platform as a new one which will use the same PHEV arhitecture as Renegade and Compass. This will be first of many applications for this new FWD platform. AFAIK development is headed by Torino R&D center. Small Wide should be a starting point. Production start is expected in the June of 2020.

Fiat snuck in their own UV Coupe under the radar.

Ah... A model for Mercosur market. Small Wide platform with a 2695 mm wheelbase, 4600 mm in length and 1610 mm in height.

But production version will most likely be a more boxy with 5+2 seating.

I confirm...something seems moving, but probably not an ALFA. There are in fact rumors that this could be a Ford and not an ALFA. If true...sorry for that:rolleyes:
