Anyone used to travel through Thailand on car? I need your help

My wife loves Thailand a lot. I plan to visit Thailand with her this October. We want to explore the whole Thailand on car so that we can have all the scenery into our eyes. I think I will rent a Toyota Fortuner. SUV is always a good choice for long-distance travel. But I also want to hear your precious suggestions. Could anyone recommend me more cars that you think are better? I will appreciate your answers.

I did that once and got attacked by monkeys. I'd be extra careful now because those animals aren't fed by tourists anymore (because there are no tourists anymore except you), and they're even more vicious now.
