Pictures Audi A7 2018 vs. BMW 6—Series GT

An 8er GC would be more like an Aston Martin Rapide, I believe. A true coupe with four doors instead of a pseudo sedan.

Rapide-esque, no ?*

Yes, I fully realize that this image is a re-post.

I'm not sure about that, the Vision Gran Coupe was used to preview that entire generation of 6-er, so it was at least on the table well before the launch of the bread and butter convertible and coupe. It was clearly a reaction to the market, rather than leading it.... but they can't all be X6's :D

The GranCoupe was conceived to compensate after cancellation of the production CS Concept. Just to think that we would be on the second generation of that car by this time.

Not that the Gran Coupe has been a disappointment. It settled in a niche that was lucrative and indeed great scope for growth.
It extended a segment for more practical sports cars. It was cost effective to develop and produce and made more money than any Nigerian or Ugandan lottery currently offer.

I loved the seating position in 5GT. Something in the middle between a SUV and a regular car. But...

The exterior - AUDI hands down. Design, proportions - everything is great. Nowadays they are the best in hiding front wheel drive layout)

The interior - I am not a fan of either, but BMW have much more drawbacks for me.

I think Volvo deserves the crown of best hiding the frontwheel drive layout with it's 90 series...

its the competitor to the A7. Both occupying the middle ground , 7er >6GT>5er and A8 >A7>A6.

I would think the 6GT is an active sport utility wagon, (in the pipeline of the Honda Accord Crosstour.)

The A7 possesses coupe like styling like the CLS with a liftback gate. The styles are quite different.

6er GT is an excellent product, vehicle - from driver's & passenger's POV: if they want a comfy, luxury & roomy cruiser. But since its form follows function (trying to be a crossover, a sedan & coupe all-in-one) it's looks are rather compromised. And compared to A7 it's evident it's not a sporty luxury 5dr coupe / hatchback but a comfy one. So there's no extra sharpness in 6er GT. And there's a bit less style due to more clumsy crossover appearance. But it's more imposing due to it's sheer size. And it caters to rather more conservative (older? family oriented?) customers who prefer comfort over sportiness, And a bit more classic luxury to new (avantgarde & techy) one.

If you want sportiness & sharp & avantgarde style go for A7; if you want comfort & (more conventional) function (combined with rather quirky exterior look) go for 6er GT. It's a classic mind vs hearth choice. :) Since both cars are in the same price segment (competing directly with CLS & CLS Shooting Brake).

BMW will offer a proper sporty 4dr coupe (with more expressive styling & more tech inside) in the near future - yet it won't compete directly with A7 & CLS but it will be positioned even higher than 6er GC was (which was in line with 7er SWB prices in many markets): the 8er Gran Coupe. So, the 6er GT is and will remain the price segment rival of A7 & CLS, although being a different type of vehicle than A7 & CLS: a 5dr coupe-sedan-hatchback crossover with elevated sitting position.

I remember when back in the day, some good 10 years ago on these very boards, it was said BMW would make its three core sedans more coupeish instead of having a traditional sedan and a 4dr coupe.

I believe that should have been a good move. After all, when you see a G30 with the M Pack, you realise there is not much effort needed to make it a CLS/A7 competitor.

a7, easy!
The only conditions which i'd pick a BMW over Audi are if the bmw is a M and the audi a regular model, or if we're talking FWD, i would go RWD over it without a second tought!
Also, this new a7 is awesome.

They are not direct competitors but this is the closest BMW has got.
Tell them to make a proper 5 series coupe or do a proper 6 series.
