Valfenera d’Asti, January 29, 2025 – Automobili Mignatta presents the first teaser images of Rina, an exclusive two-seater barchetta that combines the timeless elegance of 1960s sports cars with the most advanced construction technologies. Rina is the perfect synthesis of what makes Italian-made cars world-famous: beauty, innovation, craftsmanship, and driving pleasure. Its iconic design conceals an ultra-modern carbon monocoque and an outstanding mechanical setup—a technical formula that maximizes the connection between vehicle and driver.

The car, built to order with artisanal precision, will be fully revealed on May 8, 2025, and will be assembled by hand in Valfenera d’Asti (Piedmont) in an exclusive limited production of just 30 units per year.

The extensive use of carbon fiber—for the monocoque, bodywork, and numerous other components—is the key to Rina’s unparalleled driving sensations. Thanks to this composite material, the car boasts an extremely low dry weight of approximately 1,000 kg and exceptionally high torsional rigidity, ensuring sublime driving dynamics.

This extreme lightness and structural rigidity are paired with a meticulously engineered mechanical layout. Beneath the hood lies a powerful and exhilarating naturally aspirated V8 engine, positioned in a front-mid configuration and connected to a six-speed transaxle manual gearbox, which in turn drives a rear limited-slip differential. Rina has no infotainment system or radio: the roaring V8 engine provides the soundtrack for every journey. The electronic components are minimal, designed solely to enhance the car’s performance and comfort.

Automobili Mignatta reveals the first images and technical details of the “JM-SM” carbon monocoque, the structural core of Rina, a refined analogue speedster inspired by the timeless Italian sports cars of the 1960s.

Developed using cutting-edge design and lamination techniques, the JM-SM—short for JM Super Monocoque—is produced by JM, a composite materials specialist with over 25 years of expertise and the parent company of Automobili Mignatta.

A Technological Benchmark

The JM-SM monocoque was engineered to deliver extraordinary rigidity and minimal weight, forming the basis for outstanding dynamic performance. With a weight of just 71 kg, it offers a torsional stiffness of approximately 101,000 Nm/deg and a flexural stiffness of 2.24 kN/mm—figures that set new benchmarks in the automotive sector. Its smart design allows seamless integration with different mechanical layouts and incorporates a tub-like structure that houses the seats, enhancing both safety and structural integrity.

“Through advanced virtual simulations, we optimized the monocoque’s performance to an exceptional degree,” explains Andrea Chiumello, Chief Engineer of the Rina project. “It’s a structure defined by impressive stiffness and lightness, achieved through strategic use of carbon fiber, high-performance laminates, and weight-saving core materials like foams and honeycombs.”

Carbon fiber not only forms the monocoque but is also extensively used for Rina’s flowing bodywork and numerous other components, contributing to the car’s incredibly low dry weight of approximately 1,000 kg.

Under the hood lies a naturally aspirated, high-power V8 engine in a front-mid configuration, paired with a six-speed manual transaxle gearbox and a self-locking rear differential—delivering a pure, analogue driving experience rarely seen today.

Are you among those who often say: "Ah, they don't make sports cars like they used to in Italy anymore"? Well, prepare to change your mind because, yes, there are those who still make supercars in the old way, but with the best modern technology. I'm talking about Automobili Mignatta, or AM for those who prefer extreme brevity. This is a new company based in Valfenera d'Asti, in Piedmont. From its atelier – frankly, calling it a workshop seems reductive – comes the Rina, a barchetta I had already mentioned when the teasers and initial information about the carbon fiber monocoque were released. Now the car holds no more secrets. Let's discover it in every detail, starting with an interesting fact: the name pays homage to Caterina, the grandmother of the founder, José Mignatta. Ah, it can already be ordered with a price starting from €290,000 excluding taxes, and I say "starting from" because the car can be customized in every detail. The first deliveries are expected between winter and spring 2026.

A Pure Sports Car

At first glance, the AM Rina strikes you with its long hood, powerful fenders, and a tapering tail. And it also surprises you with what's missing: roof, windows, and windshield, replaced by two small Plexiglas fairings. The result is a sleek line, which with its subtle curves can almost be defined as sensual. The credit goes mainly to the line that defines the wheel arches and fenders, while the front is characterized above all by the elliptical grille. Two refinements for connoisseurs? The flush-fitting hinges of the hoods and the wheels, which are inspired by the typical designs of Sixties wheels.

Everything Around the Driver

The interior is of the same mold, minimalist and without the slightest frill. Digital screens and infotainment are banished here. Everything is studied and designed around the driver and to make the driving experience special. The instrumentation prominently features the rev counter, flanked by indicators for fuel level, water temperature, oil temperature, and oil pressure. All the dials are framed by aluminum bezels, while the speedometer is on the central console. The seats are made directly in the carbon fiber monocoque to ensure maximum compactness and functionality. Their enveloping upholstery is another detail with an old-style flavor. The mix of materials is quite something, with aluminum alternating with carbon fiber and leather, specifically tanned in Italy and cut with numerically controlled machinery. Stitching, gluing, and upholstery are done strictly by hand, as befits a car with a truly artisanal approach.

Rina is Tough…

Speaking of materials, the main ingredient used in the Rina's "kitchen" is undoubtedly carbon fiber, a true specialty of JM, the company from whose rib Automobili Mignatta was born. Its extensive use allows for a reduced dry weight and very high torsional rigidity, two key prerequisites for high-level driving dynamics. While waiting to experience it firsthand, I can give you three figures that will delight engineers. The monocoque boasts a weight contained to just 71 kg and a torsional rigidity of approximately 101,000 Nm/degree, as well as a flexural rigidity of 2.24 kN/mm. In any case, even if the numbers mean little to you, trust me: it's a lot.

…But It Has a Big Heart

Under the hood of the AM Rina, in a front-mid position, lies a naturally aspirated 5.0 V8 engine, born under the Ford banner and fine-tuned in collaboration with Italtecnica Engineering. Supporting it is a classic 6-speed manual transmission placed on the rear axle according to the transaxle layout, in a block with a self-locking rear differential. Maximum power and torque are still top secret and will only be officially announced after homologation, for which a partnership has been established with TÜV Rheinland. In any case, the original engine starts at around 460 hp. Among the salient features are refinements such as aluminum pistons, a forged crankshaft, direct and indirect fuel injection, twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT), and high-flow aluminum cylinder heads. Turned on – I tell you – it has a thrilling sound. Seeing the Rina and thinking of the AC Cobra seems quite normal.

Perfect Weight and Shape

The chassis promises to be worthy of such mechanics. Front and rear double wishbone suspensions with adjustable shock absorbers are secured to the subframes that integrate the monocoque. The wheels, 19″ at the front and 20″ at the rear, are forged and fitted with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires. As for the brakes, the Brembo system uses 6-piston fixed calipers at the front, coupled with 360 mm self-ventilating discs. At the rear, there are 4-piston fixed calipers and 350 mm self-ventilating discs. The Rina's curb weight is around 1000 kg, evenly distributed between the two axles. Carbon-ceramic brake discs are available as an option, which can further reduce weight.

Quite a handsome little car. Too bad the interior is stuck in 2010.

Since it's a windscreen-less roadster, nobody will buy it. But that's ok, because it's gonna make for a nice prop at industry expo stand of JM Carbonio.
