296 [2021-] [Hot!] Ferrari 296 GTB - New V6 Hybrid Supercar for 2022

The Ferrari 296 (Type F171) is a two-seater, offered as a GTB coupe and a GTS folding hard-top convertible. It is a plug-in hybrid with a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and its powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 120-degree bank angle V6, with an electric drive fitted in between the engine and gearbox. The 296 can be driven in electric-only mode for short distances, to comply with use in urban zero-emission zones.
On June 24th, Ferrari will debut its supercar that's expected to pack a hybridized twin-turbo 3.0L V6. Expected approx. hp output at ~700.
That sounds exciting! A hybridized twin-turbo 3.0L V6 with around 700 hp will definitely push the boundaries of performance. Can't wait to see what Ferrari has in store for us!

Ok all, here's my take so far on the 296.

Pros:

1. Change of direction is incredible. Best I've ever experienced. The short wheel base and super direct steering create something that's truly all time, world class great. Makes 765 feel lazy by comparison.
2. Car is magic carpet ride smooth with bumpy road mode activated. It's my most comfortable car, period, with BRM on.
3. Sound has a GREAT tone. But it's a bit muted overall. If it was 10% louder, it'd be perfect. Hello exhaust and high flow cats. If I keep the car, I'll make that mod. Z06 has ruined me right now for sound. It sounds better than 765 but less raw and loud. Personal preference which is better, I guess.
4. Acceleration is strong! But it's more linear and you can tell Ferrari limits the torque in the lower gears unlike Mclaren which gives full torque in third. It doesn't have that wide eyed, oh shit, acceleration feeling of the 765.
5. Traction control is spectacular. Car barely spins. Just goes. Ferrari nailed it. Confidence inspiring to the max.
6. I know it's brake by wire but they've worked some magic with brake feel (albeit synthetic).
7. Fit and finish is phenomenal. Car feels tight and very well built.

Cons:
1. Seating position. I want the seat two inches lower. If you have a long torso I really don't think you can fit in the car. I also want the seat rake adjusted to be more reclined. It's too upright.
2. Throttle and brake pedal are too close together. I understand on the Mclaren why they are (carbon tub) but don't get why on this car. My Z06 Vette has perfect pedal position.
3. Gear paddle action isn't good. It's too clicky.

Neither pro nor con:
1. Steering wheel haptics don't bother me at all. I think it's cool and it's responsive. Maybe it's gotten better over time.
2. I like the digital dash and all the information it shows. I'm good with the future direction that's going. It would antiquated to keep the center rev counter, I think. But I can see it being a big deal to some. Personal preference there.

So, this or 765? Well, as a car, this 296 is superior. It's more beautifully made. It has a greater breadth of capability. The ability to be full electric is really cool. It has a go-kart feel like the 765, even better change of direction, but less scary due to the greater traction control. But as an experience, 765 ALL day. 765 feels like it grows directly out of your hands and feet. It's synaptic. And it's truly scary, brutally quick. The Ferrari feels like a car that's engineered to be so great. The complexity is perfectly hidden. The extra mass is countered with electrons and computers to make it dance. The Mclaren feels unfiltered. Light, raw, rattly, and brutally effective. I think they're great compliments to each other. I can see some people preferring the 296 over the 765 especially as a road trip car. But if you're looking for an adrenaline filled fun machine, it's the 765, no question.

Here's my thoughts I posted on Fchat, 296 vs 765. I'll post in the 765 section as well.

Ok, to get perspective, took the 765 out after the 296. They really do drive differently. Which is great. Let's go after it point by point:

1. Seating position: 765 10/10. 296 6/10. 765 is more reclined. The bucket seats are tighter around the hips which makes one feel more secure. The 765 has 3 more inches of head room and 3 more inches of leg room. The 296 seating position is absolutely it's downfall. The seating position reclining 5 degrees more would be huge. It's Porsche GT3 upright at the moment.

2. Sound: 765 8/10, 296 8/10. 765 is much louder at start up. The whole car rattles. I like the pops of the transmission at up shift in sport mode and I LOVE the organic loud pops when you lift off the throttle. It's maniacal. The 296 is a much sweeter super car sound. Sounds more racy. Above 5k the 296 sounds better. It's just a lot quieter below 5k. You need to ring the 296 out. And the 296 does not have the pops and bangs. Maybe that comes with miles.

3. Acceleration: Both 10/10. The 765 is a more immersive acceleration experience under 100 mph simple because of the lag and less sophisticated traction make it eye openingly scary when it starts moving forward. It's an intense machine. The 296 probably moves forward at a similar pace, just hooks up better and is less intense overall under 100 mph but definitely feels quicker above 130 mph or so. Put it like this, second gear is the 765 is 30% more nuts (seat of the pants feeling) than the 296. Third gear is 10% more wild in the 765. 4th gear is the same. 5th gear in the 296 now feels 5% more intense than 765. Etc. My guess is the 765's verified (by my dragy) 60-130 mph time of 4.7 seconds is .3/.4 seconds quicker than the 296 but the 100-150 mph time is exactly the same. The 150-180 mph time in the 296 is probably a little bit quicker. A lot less drag than the 765 and the 765 has more aggressive gearing.

4. Steering and Change of Direction: 765 9/10, 296 9.5/10. I know the 765 is 600 pounds lighter, but it actually feels heavier. Certainly the hydraulic rack and longer wheel base are the reasons for this. It's just less reactive than the 296. It's more progressive. But it doesn't dart like the 296 does. I do trust the 765 more, right now. I also have near 7000 miles in it. The 296 is so reactive it's border line nerve racking.

5. Braking. Both 10/10. Amazing brakes for both.

6. Overall. 765 9.5/10, 296 9/10. For me the 765 is an all time amazing machine. Crazy, immersive, loud, rattly, and fun as hell. The potential last of a wild 2010's era and best super car ever made under $1mm. The 296 is really only let down by it's seating position, but this is purely for me at 6'3 220. A smaller person wouldn't have that issue. But hey, it's my money. However, everything else about the 296 is staggering. To be that close to the GOAT and do it in a way that's different and exciting is great. And this is the NON VS version! Ferrari crushed it.

Nice pic, Rosso Maranello in the sun is insanely beautiful. Can’t wait for spring.
