Top Secret
Autobahn Adventurer
Having relegated myself to being more of a lurker at GCF, I've been spending a lot of time pursuing black and white film photography. I've always been into photography in one form or another and I think I've found my niche in film. It just has a different feel and quality of that of digital which is more appealing to me. Additionally, I feel that shooting film with a simple, all-mechanical camera allows hobbyists like myself to grasp the raw basics of photography. Having a limited number of shots and the price of development as it is today forces you to learn pretty quickly!
Additionally, the design of digital cameras nowadays puts me off using them. Large, heavy bodies and digging through menus to change simple settings doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. Film cameras such as my Leica with only the bare minimum of controls just feels right. Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone, especially with the large community of budding photographers that frequent GCF, but it's a set up that suits me perfectly. I would highly recommend any hobbyists to pick up a film camera on the cheap and run a few rolls of film to learn the basics of photography - it's very different experience than shooting with a DSLR and one that may appeal to many people!
I also recently took the step of developing my own film at home. Not only do I save money by processing film at home, but it's also very convenient and gives me more control in the whole development process. It's a magical feeling pulling your film out of the roll and seeing all your images on that little piece of film. I'd love to set up a darkroom and start wet printing soon but that's a project for another day.
Here are some pictures that I've taken since I started developing at home:
