Cars aren't designed by companies, they are designed by people. Also Mclaren themselves came out and approved the car.

Gordon was the brains behind the F1, it was his idea that he convinced Ron Dennis and the board to do it, the first sketch that was done in the airport after Senna’s fatal crash was done by Gordon. Stevens was the designer, but Gordon was the father of the F1, without him there is no F1.
