CLS [Hot!] 2021 Mercedes Benz CLS facelift (mopf)

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.

the CLS53 was 100hp down on both those cars so was off the pace. If it had more power then it would have been alot closer.

A car that opened up an entirely new segment has died such an undignified death.

I think AMG shouldnt have brought out the GT 4dr but instead done their magic on the CLS. I have seen quite a few CLS models here and they are gorgeous.

Yes! I had the last cls 63, and previous generation, amazing vehicle, probably best looking car I've owned, all it needed was the nice interior screens and exterior could have stayed almost the same! Yet... When time to get a new one, no info, heard 63 discontinued, over a year until release for gt63 as karge gap in between , double the price of a cls, said e63s was a better buy! Shame really..

The CLS jumped the shark when it took on the triangle tail lights from the A class. The predator face could not save it.

I estimate that as a concept it will not die, it will come out as an EV in a hybrid between the AMG GT four doors and the CLS itself

Major problem imo: they made a small version of it: CLA. If they would have left this model structure to this CLS alone, it would have remained popular... I had a well equiped CLS in 2012. As being younger, it was imo sportier than an S-class, but was also quite comfortable. I felt too young to drive an S. In 2013 they introduced the CLA with in my country a huge media campaign on national television... A lot of people told me: I saw your car on tv... The price of a CLA was less than half the price of CLS... In 2013, I changed to S-class, but in 2017 after 2 S-classes, I changed to BMW 7. Again for a similar reason... They made a mini version of the S-class with the C-sedan... If you pay this amount of money, I don't appreciate they make a mini-version looking very similar. There is still a big difference in riding quality, but the look is the same... Maybe a silly reason for others, but I really don't like it. I think every model should be quite unique to watch and to drive...

The CLA had absolutely nothing to do with the CLS' failure. This generation CLS is not a good car to drive, the AMG GT 4-door made the CLS pointless. There was no real AMG version of the CLS, only the weak "53" version which isn't a true AMG either. The CLS costs twice as much as the CLA and aren't even remotely the same buyer. The C has been a mini S for years and years and it hasn't bothered the S in the least in the market. The CLS was obsoleted by the AMG GT 4-door, no AMG version, terrible driving qualities for a Mercedes and clearly Mercedes put more effort into the AMG GT 4-door which is what the CLS should have been, but making that car a full AMG only gets it into full competition with the Panamera and the like. The CLS was never going to be able to do that.

The AMG GT cannibalized and overshadowed the CLS, but wasn't the CLS only on the market for a couple of years?
It is not being contemplated that the "normal" non-AMG versions of the CLS should have sold well (as in all lines the volume is given by the affordable versions), but they did not, although in my eyes it will always be nicer, it would seem that the segment mutated quite a bit to the sportier side

Each of the elements mentioned by yall certainly played some role in the demise of the CLS.

It got uglier, and was squeezed by visually similar and/or more powerful models from the higher end and lower end of the spectrum.

Things that didn't make sense with the current generation CLS:
* Engine variants or lack thereof. I know in the Australian market the CLS250d was immensely popular. This generation's entry point here was a CLS300 petrol at a massive price premium over the 250.
* Interior - The CLS always had a plusher interior than the E-class to justify the price premium. This generation was pure E-class through and through. Not one aspect of the interior had a design or quality improvement over the E-class.
* The CLS should have adopted the lift back and the AMG GT the standard boot design. Why would the AMG need to be more practical than the CLS? The A5 and A7 have proven the lift back boot is a winning formula for these '4 door coupes'

Both were launched in 2018
Really? I thought there was a difference.

The market at least in Mercedes showed its preference towards the sportier side of the four doors coupes even if one has a tailgate and the other does not.
I hope this is not the end of the cars that I consider (in general) the most sporty, elegant and beautiful of all, the four door coupes CLS's (all), current Panamera, Taycan, 6GC and 8 GC, A5, A7
They are the most elegant "saloons" among almost all types of bodywork, the AMG GT is absolutely not.

IMO I wouldn't pay 200k for a CLS63 in this shape, it doesn't have better looks than E63, but for GT63 yes, it just looks more special.
