BYD have recently shown their Shark Pickup truck/ute and its going to rip the rule book up and make the established Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D Max look like dinosaurs with its 29kwh/80km Electric Range Plug in hybrid powertrain with a 1.5 turbo inline 4 petrol combined with 1 rear and 1 front electric motor to produce a massive 320kw (435PS) and 650nm with 0-100km/h in a lightning quick 5.7sec.

What? No. American pickups are champions in North America alone. For everywhere else, it’s all about Hilux and Ranger. This BYD will fall apart after 50000 kilometres if used like a Hilux.
Nah, even the Ranger is not tough enough. Every contractor I know in the area, big or small, they all run fleets consisting almost solely of Hilux variants. Every now and then you see a Navara, and that's it.

Oh, absolutely. Ranger is nowhere near as tough as a Hilux. That said, it's selling very well and appeals to the more lifestyle / image oriented segment of the market. Would I chance an off-road trip across Botswana in one? Maybe, but with trepidation.

I have a fleet of 12 brand new Hilux 2.4 D4D 6 speed manuals running with our projects in Saudi Arabia and they are used in a combination of asphalt road, desert sand terrain, gravel roads and rocky mountain areas.

So far after 2 months of use, we have had problems with 2 vehicles already with damaged clutches after only 2000km of driving. The one car couldn't disengage the 4x4 mode and switch back to 4x2. These 4x4 pickups have thinner tyres and are always getting stuck in the sandy areas and rocky/muddy areas, their 4 wheel drive systems cant handle heavy terrains.

So in my opinion the new Hilux models are not as robust as previous generations. The major and huge benefit of running Toyota pickups is the availability of Toyota Service Centers and repair shops, they are everywhere even in small towns.

There are a number of different Chinese brand pickups here such as the Changan Hunter and its very cheap costing only about $15K but I dont know whether it will last long in the Saudi climate.

I wonder how tough the Isuzu D Max is, in comparison...
