Human and martinbo's Compact SUV Winter Meet-up

I admit it. My wife rolled her eyes when I said that I had an opportunity to meet up with an internet buddy after a 3 hour drive to one of our favourite parts of the world. Clearly, my crazy obsession had just reached a new level. The setting for this long-mooted get-together was the picturesque Free State town of Clarens, some 12km outside of the fabulous Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

So why Clarens? Well, Clarens is about 40km from Human's (his first name is Naas for those who didn't know) home town of Bethlehem and is a favourite haunt for many eastern Free Staters. Clarens is a charming little place, full of fine places to eat, lovely art galleries and a generally happy and relaxed atmosphere.

So the date & time was set at the last minute (actually, it was a last minute decision on my part to get away) contact details confirmed for the final time and we were good to go for Saturday lunch. I was chuffed to get to meet Naas as it's not often that true petrolheads get the chance to meet in person rather than interact on a forum.

Then, with a clear tinge of disappointment the news came from an unnecessarily apologetic Mr Human: The X6M had been booked for, of all things, a wedding! You can imagine how it is; in a small, close-knit community cars like an X6M are a) rare and b) make for rather fancy bridal entourage conveyance. And so, it was the missus' X1 xDrive 23d that was entrusted with making the trip. I bet Naas' wife rolled her eyes too!

Me? I wasn't phased - in fact I had no intention of doing any driving that day anyway and the X6M would've distracted from what ended up being a 9 hour solid "kuier" (translated as visit in Afrikaans) with great conversation with wonderful, salt-of-the-Earth people. So rapt in discussion were we that we hardly had a moment for the obligatory photo shoot and by the time we managed to address the formalities it was dusk. As a result the pictures aren't great but for those of you who care - here they are:

All in all it was a terrific get-together and I'm really chuffed to realise a friendship from within this fantastic community. Stand by for the next installment where Naas and Martin meet up again at the Johannesburg International Auto Show later this year. To our other JHB/SA members: c'mon - don't be shy, let's have a little GCF RSA Chapter meet at JIAS!

To Naas and wife Lani, thanks very much for making the meeting happen. And to my lovely ladies - thanks for being so tolerant of your car mad dad/husband.

:t-cheers:

Regards,
Martin

Nice write-up Martin. Great to see fellow GCF members taking the time and effort to meet up!

So what did you guys get up to? Did you swap rides, or just a lengthy lunch meet-up?

Both cars look great, even in the evening light! Looks like Naas took some extra time in spiffing up his ride...:D

Woow.. great stuff gents. Im sure it was a memorable trip for both of you. If you guys are planning on going to the Johannesburg International Auto Show later this year, let me know the date and time. I'll be glad for a meet. Martin, you are not as 'old' as I thought you'd be and Human not as 'young' as I thought you'd be...;)

Thanks Beemer. FYI, Naas spent no extra time spiffing up the X1. His cars always look like that! He is obsessive about keeping his cars looking like new.

Woops, my bad then. :D

Naas' X1 does indeed look spotless, and your Forester looks in great shape considering you've had it for a few years and don't mind taking the road less traveled.

As for which is which.... I reckon you blokes were separated at birth.

Quick question Martin. Have you done any modifications to your Forester (cosmetic or mechanical) ?

Heh heh Beemer... Actually that Forester is only 3 months old. The previous one was white. This is my 5th Subaru. It had been doing some rough dirt roads that weekend hence why the silver grey looks dull - it's coated in dust! :)

I never mod any of my cars - preferring to keep them standard and in warrantable spec.

Martin, glad to finally see the face behind the Subaru avatar. I must say, you're in pretty good nick - Seems like you came with an extended motor plan and have been regularly serviced :D

Awesome and thanks for sharing Martin / Naas! I would love to meet up at the JIAS but I might not be around at that time :( Will keep you guys posted.

It's trully great to see members of our little community meet up and go home with a smile on their face, as even though GCF is small, its members are spread all around the world! Congratulations to both Martin and Naas! I am sure you guys had a wonderfull time! You two guys are some of the GCF'ers I want to meet in person!

So when are you comming for vacation in Greece? :D

Better late than never! My apologies for joining such a great post and for me such a memorable meetup with our own Martin (Global Moderator / Editor on/for) GCF.

First things first, thanks Martin for posting and your write-up, as ever the true master of telling the story and factual experience just perfectly!:t-cheers:

For me it was a honorable and at the same time humbling experience of meeting Martin, wife Ruth and daughter Jenna (7). My kind of people, that's actually and understatement. I met a guy that is as crazy as myself lol. It's an experience bar-none meeting somebody that IRL are just as and in a certain sense more of a petrol head than myself. We on GCF love our cars and all related to the automobile and the industry. The people, family, friends and co-workers surrounding me and that are part of my daily life does not quite get it - my obsession that is:D

Now I had the wonderful opportunity, initiated by Martin to meet a person that feels, dreams and shares the same passion for everything related to the automobile and how we both manage to earn a living, being faithful spouses and Martin being a lovingly dad, avid tennis player, driving instructor, moderator etc...

Most memorable fact is that there was never a dull moment in the total 9 hour kuier. And not enough time either. And to the members on GCF who now Martin's broad insight into everything car related, his expertise and passionate way of write-up - Ya ain't seen nothing yet!!;)
Put the typical Martinbo write-up to passionate signaling hands and a mouth that mimic typical car sounds i.e. screeching tyres...get the picture? You can listen to this guy all day, only to want to listen to him tomorrow again:)

Obviously, I cannot wait for the - Naas and Martin meet up again at the Johannesburg International Auto Show later this year. This will certainly be THE event on my calender and frankly to any motoring enthusiast out there!

My thanks to Martin, his wife and daughter for taking the time AND to GCF and all it's loyal members for creating the opportunity to be part of a great community - online.

Regards,
Naas.

:t-cheers:

Freaking awesome guys!

If I would ever do such a thing here in Holland with, lets say, Betty.....I think we better bring guns with us or something...LOL

Great posts Martin and Naas, thanks for sharing! I can more than understand the choice of Clarens for the place to meet. I have been enchanted by the area to the point where I once thought of retiring there. Used to go to the area at times (when I lived in SA) since there was still some of my wife's family living there at the time. She grew up in Kestell as a child, in Reitz as a teenager and took piano lessons in Bethlehem etc etc.
