Vs Jaguar XJ vs. Mercedes S-Class

The new Jaguar XJ has been pitted against the Mercedes S-class in the latest Autocar head-to-head.

Writer Matt Saunders pitted the Jaguar XJ 3.0D Portfolio LWB against the Mercedes S350L CDI for the test.

Saunders first gets behind the wheel of the S-class, concluding that it is unflappably stable. "it consumes long distances with breathtaking calm," he says. "Its steering is weighty, a little inert but perfect for performing unhurried,, sweeping lane changes.
"And its throttle and brake pedal allow you to mete out just enough acceleration or stopping power to deal with traffic lights without disturbing the stillness on board."…

Love them both! Even though their in the same class, based on the visuals they seem to serve a different purpose. The Jaguar looks more sportier were as the Benz has that sophisticated business meeting look. Still wouldn't mine owning either one.

I love what Jaguar has done in this generation but there is simply nothing there that would lure me away from the S-class. At least not if I was to pay for it myself.

Here, the XJ got the 1st place, because it was pure fun to drive.

The new XJ is simply glorious, even the rear which in pictures doesn't quite gel but actually does in real life. Inside is a real culture shock to the system, at least that was my feelings when I saw it. Another worth mentioning is the stereo (B&W setup), I have the B&W setup in my XF and it's brilliant beyond compare but compared to the new XJ it's good but no longer outstanding.

If I were in the market for such a machine I would definitely place the XJ first, it's by far the prettiest, it's handling is meant to be exceptional and it offers the most kit for your dosh. The A8 is brilliant but too ugly to consider now, the S-class too old and the 7 series this the unloved rival that never lives up to the standards set by the 3 and 5 in there respective sectors.

Wow, I seriously need to apply at Autocar as a car photographer! Because under my watch there would never be droplets of water inside the car that is about to be photographed. There would never be a dirty and wet floor mat on the floor either. This is a horrible picture and also makes the interior look bad (also because it was taken with flash).

I´m surprised to see the Jag beating the BMW in the Autobild test, for me, the bimmer is just way better than the XJ in every single aspect.

The 7 series I drove was on 20" rims and it's ride was too harsh to be classed as a luxury car, likewise the S-class was too soft to offer any sportiness.

I would reckon it's a draw between the XJ and the A8, both offer the best compromise between comfort and dynamics but after seeing the A8 in person I just can't warm to it's looks. Great interior, but ugly exterior. I know looks is a personal thing and everyone is different but I too thought the XJ wasn't great at the rear, well that was until I actually saw it in person, I am not saying it's looks are for everyone but I doubt you would still think it's awful if seen in the fresh.

Autocar, huh? Somehow I was expecting the Jag to win.

The conclusion? The Merc is refined, luxurious and effective. But the Jag is a paradigm-shifter. It can be plush and soothing one moment, composed, precise and entertaining the next.
