As mentioned before, the 5er looks like a BMW. This new design language on Mercedes-Benz, it just doesn't feel like a Mercedes-Benz. I prefer the grace and stateliness of the pre-F/L and then having the option of adding a bit more aggression with an AMG pack rather than having that constant furrowed brow. It has lost that quiet confidence that has been part of M-B's design DNA, and, to me, that's part of the brand's appeal.
Alot of what you said resonate with my thoughts.

The BMW wins this round. However I think the E53 and E63 will win the flagship battle. The rear of the E53 looks stunning in videos in a way that it doesn't in photos.

Other than they I am still grieving the loss of the preface lifted tail lights.

The E-Class interior looks like from another planet compared to the outdated old looking cockpit of the 5-series.
Mercedes had separate freestanding screens in 2012 in his A/CLA classes , Audi even in 2004 already. Now we are in 2020 and BMW still has this old media arrangement. Booring as hell..and this cheap looking ambi light-like the Skoda has it. Oh man..

The Mercedes arrangement as pictured there is one of two main things I dislike about current Mercedes interiors. It's one long free standing unit, that they then badly sculpted the dash over. It's neither elegant like a free standing unit, nor as well integrated as a full on MFD buried in the binnacle.

The current BMW solution suits my preferences down to the ground. Inevitably it will give way to bigger screens, which will naturally suffer a similar fate as other more modern arrangements, with less physical controls and less driver focus, and big clumsy looking displays all over the place... I won't be a fan of that no matter which brand it's from.

It's also quite ungainly looking from the exterior. It's obes...

Where you see obese,I see muscular. I still maintain it has the best design, both in and out. The updated 5er is hard to fault though,it's gorgeous and technically speaking is more than likely still the benchmark.

To be honest I like both cars, I think both the facelifts look good in different ways. Here are some of my subjective opinions and to choose a personal favorite is not easy. I love BMW and Mercedes, I am a fan of both brands. Probably my heart will be inclined for the E-class as an AMG spec but I have to see both in real life and evaluate carefully.

E-class
Exterior:

The E-class was already a good looking car in Pre-FL form so didnt really need an extensive exterior FL but Mercedes Benz have done justified changes to bring it in line with its current saloons such as the A-class/CLA/CLS and the upcoming S-Class and C-class next year. In my opinion the FL on the E-class has no improvement to its looks, it looks less distinctive than the pre-FL model, but has a more aggressive looking front and appearance of a wider and lower rear end. It looks best in AMG full trim, the classic grill in Exclusive spec is a little controversial with a less likable grill shape and chromeless frame. I would like to see it in brighter colours, like red, blue or green, the light gold and matt grey AMG models shown are not the most convincing colours so far.

Interior:

I like the changes Mercedes have done to the infotainment screen and instruments, glad they using touch interface combined with Voice Activation/Augmented reality etc. and the assistance systems and safety tech is top notch. I love the new steering wheels, they really are what sets this brand apart from rivals, they totally unique and in my honest opinion, Mercedes are producing the best looking wheels in the business. What I wish would have been improved/changed are some of the black shiny piano looking plastics around the switches and I am not a fan of the grey porous looking wood, I think they should have brought out press pics with the famous Zibrano wood they had in previous models or even the striped wood like in S-class/Coupe. Also the removal of the analogue clock is a little cheap skate. The interior looks fantastic with white seats, steering wheel and door trim.

5-series
Exterior:

The 5-series pre LCI was looking slightly dated and I was not a fan of the tail lights, they looked too large for the car and were not as elegant as those on the previous F10 model. The changes on the LCI are a noticeable improvement and make the 5 series a better looking car, especially the front, I like the new slimmer lights, they bring the car in line with the 3-series and 7-series, but the back lights are still not the best looking and in my opinion look a bit aftermarket with the extensive black borders and red inner colour. Just like Mercedes which looks best in AMG line, the 5 series has to be ordered in the aggressive looking M sport spec, it looks very staid in the standard/luxury line spec, I am not liking the odd looking front bumper air intakes and triangular look chrome trim.

Interior:

The 5-series already had a great looking interior with superb materials and really comfy and luxurious seats as well as a top notch infotainment system so didnt need much changing. To be honest I was slightly disappointed BMW didnt change its achilles heal and that is the digital cockpit display/graphics, it still looks less attractive and less configurable than the E-class and A6 digital instruments. The enlarged central infotainment screen also looks too large now, it would have looked better if BMW made it longer horizontally and not vertically, it doesn't look as well integrated as the displays in the 3-sereis and X5/X7 models. It would have been great if BMW also introduced a new steering wheel design as the current standard wheel and also M sport wheel look a bit boring to look at with the M sport wheel having too thick spokes.

For me, the A/S6 is currently Audis' most compelling sedan...
I'm a stereotyped BMW fan and the things I really praise are: the in-line 6, RWD(and its belonging proportions) and 50:50 weight distribution. The A6 does not have any of these, but all the rest shares the top position if not even be the best in the class.
