May Update II : The Ultimate Dream Machine : BMW Z Spyder Stradale

Growing old,,,,watching the grass grow,,,,waiting,,,,,waiting,,,,waiting,,,,for a BMW "Supercar" and nothing!!! All of a sudden "TWO" Supercars!!! :eusa_thin:
Still have to wait for the paint to dry,,,,,,this waiting game with BMW drives me crazy :t-crazy2:

I´ve been thinking and I´ve you think about it, the VED will be the rival of the R4 and the SSK from MB, everything is more logical now.

Except they both are not really super cars. One will be (if what Scott says holds true) a Z8 like luxury roadster with folding hard top and the other a ED thing.

Well, I would wait to say what you are saying. Mind that the VED is suposed to have the same performance as an E92 M3, and if the Z9 has the same engine that the M5, but with 600 hp, and is made up of carbon fibre... I think we have something close to super cars there.

What makes a supercar a "Supercar" is very hard to define, but IMHO, BMW would never be able to make one because it is simply too mass-market. I don't even think it's about performance really. A Nissan GTR is NOT a supercar yet it's faster than most exotic cars that are most definitely supercars.

How then is it, Audi and Mercedes can have supercars (R8 and SLS), but BMW not, yet M are "superior" to RS and AMG?

BMW is not too different form Audi for example, and the later is biulding the R8 and selling them like hotcakes. But I´m afraid you specially won´t be satysfies at all with the new mentioned cars. As I´ve said I think the three big germans are planning such a thing, even VW. A "small" sporty car, with a lot of hybrid tech to see who is the first one to say "Hey, look, it´s nice, fast and only 2 litres per 100 km". BMW will do like the other ones and having seen the VED Concept, I don´t see it as a bad thing.

The Spyder Stradale is another thing. I see it as a super Z4, we will see how it ends up being (if it really ends up being something, we all know BMW).

 Let´s see,,,,ingredients for "Supercar",,,,,,super exclusive(production in small numbers),,,,super powerful engine,,,,,super fast zero to 100 km/h time,,,,super top speed :t-drive:( at least over 300 km/h!!),,,,,super drop dead, head turning good looks ,,,,,oh yeah!!! and super out of this world expensive,,,,,,did I leave anything out :D????

Yes.... It has to be very impractical :D :D :D

IMO, the most beautiful "supercar" is still the BMW Mc Laren F1. That was a real masterpiece and deserves full admiration.

In fact I agree. The word "supercar" is a way down-watered. "
Super car:
- very powerful (+ 600 PS)
- very expensive (~ 500.000 €)
- not really daily drivable (very track orientated)
- limited porduction
And these would be:
- Mercedes SLR McLaren (though not to extreme)
- Porsche Carrera GT
- Ferrari Enzo
- Maserati MC12

Pagani, could be a supercar, but as Koenigsegg and some other, they are to exotic. So these would get into the category of Exotic car.

Special car: The Alfa Romeo 8C, does have the attributs of a supercar, as it is very expensive and exclusive as only a 500 models produced, but is still daily drivable, and not that powerful and fast. Other special car could be the Lexus LFA, though a very good car to compete against R8 V10 and SLS AMG, it is to expensive, as limited production.

Extreme sport car:
These would be both the Ferrari 599 GTB/GTO and Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4/LP670-4 SV. WHat is missing for them to get to super car category is that they are not limited production (the basic models 599 GTB and Murcielago LP640-4).

High-performance sport car:
These are very fast sport cars, that are very fast. They cost between 150.000 and 200.000 €. They are no limited production models. These are:
- Mercedes SLS AMG
- Porsche 911 Turbo
- Audi R8 V10
- Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
- Ferrari 458 Italia
- McLaren MP4-12C
- Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Sport car:
These are some small "affordable" sport cars, with around 300 PS. They are not exclusive or very special, not very fast, but faster than any normal car. These are:
-Mercedes SLK
-Porsche Boxter/Cayman
-BMW Z4
-Audi TT

Hyper car:
These are some just about power. And of course when there is much power, the price is high, and because the price is high, they are exclusive and special. These would be the Buggati Veyron and the Aston Martin One-77.

The GT-R cannot be put into any category, because it has four seats, and is much cheaper than any other car here, even if it is sometimes faster. Its cheap price does not mean it is not a special car.

Eco-sport car:
This is a new sport car category, which will maybe be started by BMW with their hybrid rear engine 3 cylinder diesel, 2+2 seater, BMW VED. It will be as fast as an M3 (E92), but economic as a 116d (E81), if not faster and more economic.

Now, back to the BMW Z Spyder Stradale: If it is not a super car, extreme sport car or high performance sport car, it does not mean it will not be able to be as fast as any of these. With 600 PS and 1300 kg, it has a very high potential, it could be faster than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, yet being more radical. Why? Because everybody would think that the rear engine Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and Audi R8 V10 are faster than the the front engine Mercedes SLS AMG, but finally the very granturismo like Mercedes beats them both. Just imagine what a Mercedes SLS AMG BS would do!

Conclusion: If BMW wants, they can make the "nice" Z Spyder Stradale faster than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, they won't be rivals, excpet in terms of performance.
