Surprisingly lovely to drive. Its rack and pinion steering system may be electrically power assisted – again to improve fuel economy by that little bit extra – but the feel and accuracy that it provides on the move is close to breathtaking at times. You can place the nose of the new C-class to the nearest millimetre in most corners, and although the assistance is quite strong, there is genuine feel on offer beneath your fingertips.

Spending time in the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is to experience a bending in reality, powering along in a car that feels like its worth twice its likely price tag.

Mercedes has predictably gone for luxury, quality and substance over out right cornering prowess. This car is going to resonate with customers better than any C-Class before it even if every press outlet doesn't get it. All they have do now is get the coupe and convertible right. Oh and get the 9G gearbox on board.

Should I buy one?
Yes, but with a few caveats. The car doesn’t feel in any way slow, but neither does it ever feel explosive like the equivalent BMW 3-series does in the mid-range, and that’s a fairly disappointing discovery given that this is, for the time being, the sportiest new C-class that money can buy.

Perhaps it’s simply the result of the rest of the car being so deeply excellent, but the overall impression of this particular new C-class is: brilliant car powered by a so-so engine. With a couple more cylinders beneath the bonnet, though, I’m sure the genius within will be revealed.

Overall very positive review so far and I think this is the first time that C class is getting praises for it's handling.

After three days and more than 300 miles on a wide variety of roads in all kinds of traffic, we would prefer the bigger engine that'll be on U.S. models, and we would check out the steel suspension before paying a bundle extra for Airmatic. Although the C250 doesn't exactly set the pavement on fire, it is notably more sophisticated than the aging Audi A4 and feels more special than the BMW 3-series. The new C-class is roomy, quiet, and well mannered. All in all, we definitely prefer the new C to the face-lifted E-class, and we would be reluctant to spend twice the money for an S-class. The genetically different front-wheel-drive CLA does not even enter this discussion.

There is no doubt about it: the new C-class is a proper Mercedes-Benz that condenses every core brand value in a more compact

, youthful wrapper. This may result in a certain amount of cannibalization, but it is also bound to guarantee significant conquest sales.

Seems to be a common theme, not the best handling, but the best luxury car in the class.

On the contrary AUTOCAR has nothing but praise for the ride and handling
The chassis, certainly in the case of the car that we drove, feels every bit as good to go with it. There is a delicious fluidity to the way that the new C-class tackles most roads. It feels almost as if the car itself takes one good look at what lies ahead, works out precisely what’s required, and then dials up the perfect mix of settings to enable you to sit back and enjoy the ride.

There is, however, a proper level of involvement to the ride and handling at the same time. It’s not just as overtly driver-orientated as a BMW 3-series, perhaps, but in its way the new C-class also feels every bit as crisp as the BMW on the move, with a more soothing ride on most surfaces to boot. And, as in the BMW only more so, you can tailor the car’s responses almost endlessly by playing with the new ‘Agility’ button, down where the gearlever might normally be.

That is one source. Most of the others say the opposite or different, nothing bad at all but not a canyon carver as MT put it. Either way it is no big deal to me. I already said that the new C wouldn't be a ATS or 3-Series beater in handling. Instead it will smoke those cars where it counts to most buyers, luxury, quality, and the like.

Since we don't get see ATS in this part of the world, I will go with the AUTOCAR:)

MOTORAUTHORITY
During our stints behind the wheel in and around Marseilles, we found the C400’s turbo V-6 a fun and willing companion in hustling the C-Class at a brisk pace. The seven-speed automatic transmission, with or without use of the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, handles the shifts with precision and quickness, though when the pace slackened a bit, we did notice a few rough shifts—perhaps issues for the software still to work out before the car’s retail sales launch this fall.

Overall, first impressions look promising. Initial reviews are saying the car has a sportier nature, but it still has that Mercedes Benz comfort intact. I'm excited for a comparison of the BMW 3 and Mercedes C. Should be very interesting.

Anyone have word on the 9G-tronic that MB was working on? I thought we'd see the debut of that transmission in the C-Class.

AutoWeek:

What Is It?

The Mercedes C-class is the brand's biggest seller, and Mercedes just made an all-new one. This new C has a lot of people to please, though -- it'll be sold in Europe, China, here in the U.S. and in markets around the world. So Benz made configurations to appeal to seemingly everyone.

While the rest of the world gets numerous intriguing powertrain variants that we won't torture you with here, we in the U.S. will get two gasoline-powered versions when the car launches here in September: The four-banger C300 4Matic and the V6-powered C400 4Matic. The C300 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection in-line four-cylinder making an unofficial 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque; the C400 4Matic gets a 3.0L turbocharged direct-injection V6 that should make 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic driving all four wheels because all wheel-drive is what most buyers in America want, Mercedes says. At launch, both sedans will ride on Mercedes' Airmatic air bag suspension as well.

Not your cup of Jagermeister? Later there will be other options for us: A C300 with steel springs holding up the corners instead of airbags arrives in spring of 2015; a 4.0-liter V8 C63 from AMG is also reportedly due in spring of 2015; in fall of 2015 look for a plug-in hybrid; in 2016 a C250 BlueTec. A convertible drives into showrooms in late 2016 or early 2017, and look for a C-class coupe shortly thereafter.

The new C-class is bigger – 3.2 inches in wheelbase, 3.7 overall and 1.6 inches in width – than its predecessor and the car is loaded with more content. To compensate, Mercedes engineers had to add lightness throughout. What it calls a hybrid aluminum body features aluminum roof, doors, deck lid and strut housings combined to knock off 220 pounds of curb weight. All the new content combines to take back about 120 pounds of that, for a net drop in curb weight of about 100 pounds despite all the new stuff.

New features include all the safety equipment formerly found on the E- and S-class sedans, including: Distronic Plus with Pre-Safe brake, active blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist, Pre-Safe Plus rear-end collision protection, steering assist and BAS Plus with cross-traffic assist. Suffice to say, in the new C-class you will live forever.

The new Mercedes C300 and C400 will arrive in the United States this fall.
What's It Like To Drive?

We got to pilot two new C-class versions, both Euro-spec: the C250 BlueTec diesel and a C400 4Matic. The car takes a little getting used to. Both of our testers had Mercedes' Airmatic suspension, the agility select on which could be set to eco, comfort, sport, sport+ and individual. The settings adjust response to transmission, throttle, engine braking and the amount of slip allowed by the stability control system.

We tried the first four and felt that even in sport+ there was just a little more lean than we'd have expected. In the lower settings there was more than that. It was not what you'd call a sporty ride at all, and there was a little less chassis control than we'd have preferred. More time with the car would have allowed us to program our own unique settings that might have been more to our liking via the individual option.

The variable-ratio electromechanical direct steer system lunged a little more as it got further from on-center, too. Even the brakes felt more touchy than we'd have liked at the top of brake pedal travel. More time might give us a second opinion, though, so don't be immediately put off on your test drive around the dealer's lot if you're looking for a more responsive experience.

The thing is, Mercedes has to sell this all over the world, and markets in China might want a little more comfort and luxury over sportiness. Mercedes lists key competitors as the BMW 3-series, Audi A4, Lexus IS and Cadillac CTSand all of those are more fun to drive than our European C-class testers.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-class interior has been upgraded to bring it in line with current Mercedes models like the CLA and S-class.
Do I Want It?

The arrival of the CLA as the entr- level Benz in America means the C-class is going to go upscale more than just a little. This one has done just that, with more room and more features than ever before. As far as character on the road, Mercedes sedans have always leaned more toward luxury than performance anyway, and that tradition continues with this new C.

If you're looking for something that's strictly fun to drive, look at the rest of the competition. If you're looking for safety, convenience and luxury, drive a C-class.

Keep in mind this is just a first impression and a first drive of two Euro-spec models. Further details, including pricing, packaging and, hopefully, more drive time will be coming before the car's September U.S. launch. Heck, we might even have U.S. specifications for you by then.

Premiere for the new C-class in Sweden this weekend. If I have the time I'll go and check it out.

Two more reviews

Conservative in some respects, adventurous in others, the new Mercedes C-Class carefully refines a familiar, established formula into a potential class leader. The version that we tested isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely sharper to drive than before. More importantly, the raw ingredients show real promise – by being more practical, more efficient and offering S-Class levels of comfort, the C-Class seems to get much of the everyday stuff you take for granted absolutely spot-on. It’ll give the 3 Series a hard time when the two come face-to-face in the summer.

great reviews more or less.. this seems to be a great new C..

Can not wait for the AMG..

And it seems that MB are nailing the steerings these days:)

Interesting review from Sutters. The car looks amazing, but it seems like BMW still has MB beat in the hardware department.
