S-Class W140 Modern classics: the S-Class Saloons of the Mercedes-Benz 140 series (1991 to 1998)

The Mercedes-Benz W140 is a series of flagship vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from 1991 to 1998 in sedan/saloon and coupe body styles and two wheelbase lengths (SE and SEL). Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W140 S-Class at Geneva International Motor Show in March 1991, with the sales starting in April 1991 and North American launch was on 6 August 1991.

Is there a way to make an S350 Turbodiesel quicker? Because remap is out of the question, but 148 hp is too weak for the W140's bulk.

When it was launched in 1991, the W140 was criticized for being too big and expensive. Fast forward to 2024, when Mercedes is going fully electric with jelly-bean designs, and suddenly the W140 is desirable—proof that, looking back, we didn’t know how good we had it.

Does your S350 Turbodiesel have the OM606 engine? It is well known for making huge power of at least 500HP when given some mods.

Here is a S124 T-Wagon with a 500HP/720nm OM606 modified motor.

The real competitor of W140 was of course the BMW 7er E32. That car alone caused many head aches in Sindelfingen and led to a belated introduction of the W140 of 18 months.

The W140 found quite a strong match with the E38 7-series, as it improved on the E32 with even better comfort, NVH and space. Both excellent cars.

Sure, but the shock the e32 7er caused, wasn't felt as severe with the e38 7er.
The E32 is my favorite 7series ever. I remember so much in 1986 when it launched it caused a stir as it was so well designed and had a great interior with those fabulous buffalo leather pleated seats. The car was a sensation to drive, it was a proper drivers machine. But when the 750iL V12 was launched in 1987 the excitement went up to the next level, the first V12 German saloon in many years. Mercedes had a V8 for many years, but with a V12 BMW definitely shook the earth another notch.

I absolutely agree. Do remember the launch and the excitement of the first post war V12 very well. Dream car material at that time for me. The Benz Buster, If there ever was one 😉

Which gave birth to the mighty M120.
What an era for German cars eh?
I do think the 1990s was the era with the most intense BMW Vs Mercedes battle with some fantastic models from both sides. In my opinion BMW made the most ground, they over engineered their cars to come close to matching or even beating the equivalent Mercedes models. The E39 5 series in my opinion was the car that elevated BMW to a new level, it was their best car with a brilliant combination of class leading comfort and driving dynamics that gave the W210 E class alot of bloody noses in comparison tests.
