The McLaren MP4-12C, later rebranded as the McLaren 12C, is a sports car produced by McLaren Automotive. Manufactured between 2011 and 2014, the MP4-12C was available as both a coupe and a retractable hard-top convertible, the latter known as the "Spider".

McLaren Automotive is expanding its lineup with the addition of its second model, the new 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider, which is ready for order and is priced from $268,250 including destination.

The convertible supercar comes just one year after the launch of the hard-top MP4-12C and gets all the latest features introduced with the 2013 update.

This means that peak output from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 is a healthy 616 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, which is all the more impressive when you consider the powertrain escapes a gas guzzler tax.

As for the new roof system, McLaren calls the setup the ‘Retractable Hard Top’ and has designed it so that it can be operated at speeds of up to 19 mph. Raising or lowering the roof takes just 17 seconds and top speed remains an impressive 204 mph--just 3 mph shy of the hard-top’s peak.

Thanks to the MP4-12C’s carbon fiber ‘MonoCell’ chassis, no additional strengthening was required for the MP4-12C Spider. The result is a sports car almost identical to its fixed roof equivalent, and weighing only 88 pounds more with the addition of a convertible option. Overall weight with all fluids on board comes in at around 3,200 pounds.

As there is no serious weight gain, performance of the MP4-12C Spider almost matches that of the hard-top. With its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in its most potent setting, 0-60 mph acceleration takes just 3.1 seconds while the quarter mile is passed in 10.8 seconds at a speed of 134 mph.

Behind the driver and passenger sits a rear windscreen which may also be electronically lowered and raised. With the roof lowered this acts as wind deflector, and with the roof raised the rear window can still be lowered, allowing the engine’s sweet exhaust note to roar into the cabin.

Also with the roof raised there is around 1.8 cubic feet of storage behind the cabin. Bespoke luggage has been designed specifically to fit this space and is supplied as standard with the car. A rollover protection system is also fitted, with each of those tall buttresses containing a steel structure designed to absorb impact energy and protect occupants.

Inside, the design is much the same as that found in the hard-top model. Some new features that are available across the MP4-12C range include semi-aniline perforated leather and Alcantara trim. There is also a new 19-inch wheel pattern for 2013 and vehicle lift feature. With this latter feature onboard, owners will be able to raise the ground clearance by up to 40 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear in order to escape those bumps. The best part is that the vehicle can operate in a raised state at speeds of up to 37 mph.

As mentioned, the 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider is ready for order and should commence deliveries in November. In the mealtime, head over to the McLaren website and play around with the new configurator.

I love it.

It looks terrible and unfinished to me, like a dodgy tuner special. I don't like that black panel behind the side windows, it gives the impression that the car has a taga top instead of a full retractable roof.

Both this and the 458 Spider have the same system of roof opening, except that the one of the McLaren folds in two parts for leaving a small window on the top of the engine. Why I like the 458 Spyder and MP4-12C Spider is because of their roof it looks like Targa top, and IMO it is much better than when Spyder with cloth roof like the VAG ones. I wish the R8/Cabrera replacement to get the same hardtop roof.

McLaren MP4-12C Spider delivers very similar performance to that of fixed-head model; priced at £195,000

The all-new McLaren MP4-12C Spider will be capable of 196mph with its innovative retractable hard-top roof down. The new open-top McLaren can match its coupé sibling from zero to 62mph - taking 3.1sec - despite having a 40kg weight penalty.

The MP4-12C Spider features a two-piece retractable hard-top that is stowed behind the seats when not in use. The compact design of the system lets the Spider keep the glass engine cover of the coupé.

The roof can be positioned up or down in 17 seconds and at road speeds of up to 19mph using a button on the centre console. A glass screen between the two buttresses can be operated independently of the roof. This can act as a windbreak with the roof down, or for ventilation with the roof up.

McLaren supplies two soft bags with the MP4-12C Spider that are designed to fit in the 52-litre storage space behind the seats when the roof is up. McLaren managing director Antony Sheriff briefed the Woking outfit to ensure that the MP4-12C lost none of its usability in becoming a Spider.

Power for the Spider comes from the same 616bhp 3.8-litre V8 as the coupé, the only power output you can get for the MP4-12C after last month’s revisions to the coupé.
The Spider matches the coupé’s 0-62mph time but takes 0.2sec longer to get from zero to 124mph (9.0sec). The top speed of 196mph with the roof down increases to 204mph with the roof up.

The Spider also shares its lightweight carbonfibre Monocell chassis with the coupé. McLaren says that no extra strengthening has been needed for the Spider. Rollover protection is incorporated into the buttresses.

Other tweaks for the Spider include an audio system that adjusts its volume and tone according to whether the roof is up or down, and a revised climate control system that also adjusts to compensate for the outside elements.

The MP4-12C Spider is available to order now, priced from £195,500. That’s an increase of £19,500 over the coupé. First deliveries are expected in November.
