Members old enough to recall the Polo I of 1975 will remember just how utterly austere an automobile could be. The interiors' materials consisted of painted metal, hard black plastic, vinyl and a sort of uncovered pressboard (for the door paneling) on the über-strippo 0,9L base model.

I went to see the standard version yesterday. Unfortunately, trunk space isn't much of an improvement, not better than my Fiesta. Rear space is good, you fit two adults but they forgot about the trunk space. VW Golf is still a larger car but there is new generation coming soon, perhaps better to wait.

Unless you need shoulder room for three adults in the back or a bigger boot, get the Polo. It's such a versatile car and the boot should be enough for 90% of your needs. For big holidays you can get a roof box, it's cheaper than getting a Golf with the same equipment.

Great reviews. It makes me miss by Skoda Fabia I recently sold. Although these cars aren't hot hatches, the light 1,100kg, low-end torque engine and good steering makes them fun to drive.
The Polo has grown up alot and will be large enough for most people, even for carrying adults in the back. I do agree with Thomas about the interior quality though.
There is too much hard plastic in this car and in the VW T-Roc, every surface is hard plastics which didn't use to be the case for VW cars. The Skoda Karoq for example has lots of soft touch material and almost feels positioned above the T-Roc.
It will be interesting to see if the new Golf feels premium on the inside of whether VW have cut corners to claw back penalty fees for the diesel scandal.

VW is believed to consolidate its engine offerings for the new Polo, with base models getting a revised 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol available in a number of outputs ranging from 65PS to 115PS. There will also be a larger 1.5-liter turbo four petrol sourced from the Golf with 130PS and 150PS. The diesel range will likely include a 1.6-liter four offered in 80-110PS guises.
