718 Boxster/Cayman (982) [Official] Porsche 718 Boxster

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman are mid-engine two-seater sports cars manufactured and marketed by Porsche across four generations—as a two-door, two-seater roadster (Boxster) and a three-door, two-seater fastback coupé (Cayman). Since the introduction of the fourth generation in 2016, the two models have been marketed as the Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman.
How’s it going to fit, the car is designed for boxer engines, it would be a major undertaking to redesign it for an in-line engine.

I was just dreaming about a more engaging engine i guess. How does the flat 6 compare to the in-line 5? Same problem with the current engine compartment? I saw an article years ago about someone who stuffed a v8 into a Cayman.

2019 Porsche Boxster Spyder Prototype Shows Production Design, Manual Gearbox
Porsche is currently preparing to introduce two works of art. No, we're not referring to anything like the Goodwood Festival of Speed Porsche sculpture. Instead, we're talking about the cloth roofs of the 2019 718 Boxster Spyder and 2019 911 Speedster. For now, we'll focus on the latter, since a prototype of the mid-engined special has recently been spotted in European traffic.
The test car we have here comes almost naked and it's obvious that, unlike the GTS, the Spyder receives dedicated front and rear aprons.

As for the said roof of the sportscar, previous spyshots have allowed us to notice that this is similar to the one used by the now-retired Boxster Spyder.

The middle section of the car is expected to be occupied by the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six that animates the 991.2-generation 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS. Nevertheless, the motor, which delivers 500 and 520 hp, respectively, is expected to be downtuned, with its output actually sitting closer to 400 hp.

As Porschephiles know all too well, in the world of Zuffenhausen, talking about the 718 Boxster Spyder coming with a manual gearbox makes for a Captain Obvious report. Nevertheless, we mentioned this since there have been multiple rumors on the German carmaker introducing a PDK for the newcomer.

In other words, zooming in on the cabin of the prototype we have here reveals a steering wheel that doesn't pack any gearshift paddles for that PDK tranny.

However, since the uber-quick dual-clutch unit would allow the numbers of the mid-engined machine to go even deeper into Neunelfer territory. And that's a no-no.

Regardless, we should see the 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder and the 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 making their debut this fall.

As is the tradition, the mid-engined models will arrive in limited numbers, so if you're looking to grab one, you might want to give your dealer a call.

That front bumper looks awesome! It is reminiscent of the 918 front and complements the 718 perfectly.

Porsche Boxster, Cayman EV Development Hindered By Heavy Batteries

Head of their R&D team, Dr. Michael Steiner said: 'We are running several electrified Boxsters to gain expertise and knowledge to see how an electric car performs as a two-door. But there is no final decision yet.' While heavier Gran Touring cars like the Taycan can deal with the added weight of batteries, Steiner has said that "the additional weight for a sports car, we are not satisfied with today. This is one of the reasons why our next electric car will be a small SUV, not a two-door sports car." He's talking about the new Macan for 2021, which will be offered as a fully electric vehicle in some territories. The project to electrify more focused sports cars is active, but still far off, and with the slow but steady increase in breakthroughs with lithium-ion batteries, Porsche is waiting for bigger leaps in weight loss, such as solid-state batteries. We predict a 2-3% improvement year-by-year in lithium-ion battery improvement. "I am still not happy with the weight, though. But that does not mean there won’t be a sports car.'
