2015 Range Rover Sport SVR unveiled, costs $110,475

Being billed as the sportiest Land Rover ever created
Land Rover has officially unveiled the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR, ahead of its debut at Pebble Beach on August 14th.

Described as the "most dynamically focused" Land Rover ever produced, the high-performance model is distinguished by a new front bumper with larger air intakes that feed two intercoolers. The model also has a revised grille, distinctive front fender vents, muscular side skirts and 21-inch alloy wheels with Continental Cross Contact all-season tires. Moving further back we can see a larger rear spoiler and a new rear bumper with a gloss black diffuser that is flanked by a four-tailpipe exhaust system.

The cabin is instantly recognizable but features front and rear sports seats that have two-tone Oxford leather upholstery with reflective piping and SVR badging. The model also boasts turned aluminum trim but carbon fiber trim is optional.

Power is provided by a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine that develops 550 bhp (410 kW) and 502 lb-ft (680 Nm) of torque - 40 bhp (30 kW) and 41 lb-ft (55 Nm) more than the Range Rover Sport Supercharged. It is connected to a sport-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system which enables the crossover to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 162 mph (260.7 km/h). This setup has already allowed the model to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 8 minutes 14 seconds.

Speaking of performance the Range Rover Sport SVR has a recalibrated Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential which "locks earlier and to an increased extent" to ensure torque is transferred to the rear wheel with most traction. The model also has a center differential with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch and an improved Torque Vectoring system which constantly balances the distribution of engine torque during cornering. Other highlights include Brembo brakes and an aluminum-intensive sports suspension with upgraded bushings, an improved Active-Roll Control system and a reprogrammed Adaptive Dynamics system - among other things.

According to Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director John Edwards, "The Range Rover Sport SVR is a natural progression beyond the core vehicle's outstanding on- and off-road capabilities and leading-edge design. It's exhilarating performance will satisfy a particularly demanding customer set."

The Range Rover Sport SVR will be priced from $110,475 - excluding a $925 destination and delivery fee - in the United States.

Is it because of its XL Evoque styling?

Not really that, but everytime I see one it has small wheels and black trim around the bottom of the body. Then again, the styling is just too slick and soft for a RR SUV IMO so that is part of the problem too for me. For the first time I like the regular RR more than the RR Sport. I have yet to see the RRS SVR in person though.

IMO the regular RR is and has always been vastly superior to the rest. The regular RR has got to be the most beautiful SUV (from the outside) ever created. I can't get over how good that car looks, and I still can't get over the fact it's not made by a company I admire. Baffles me to no end.

Oh hey wow.. check it out, that actually looks pretty darn good. Front bumper isn't overdone, no tasteless blacked-out wheels, nor chrome trimming everywhere on the outside. Sexy & Confident. Very nice.

Range Rover Sport SVR first ride review

We get our first taste of the most powerful and fastest Land Rover ever made: the Range Rover Sport SVR
As we come around the final corner, a push of the throttle is all it takes for us to start to slide. It’s all under control, yet we straighten up only just before we hit the dry part of the track. Then we’re off again, with an exhaust bellow and enough power to pin you to your seat.

You might think we’re in a race car, or even a supercar. But we’re not. We’re in a two-tonne-plus luxury off-roader. This isn’t any old high-end 4x4, though – it’s the Range Rover Sport SVR. This is our first proper encounter, albeit as a passenger, as JLR’s handling and development expert Mike Cross gives us a ride around the Rockingham circuit in Northants.

The SVR uses the same 5.0-litre supercharged V8 as the top-spec Range Rover Sport Autobiography, but power has been increased from 503bhp to 542bhp. It’s noticeable, too: “You have to watch out for the weight changing direction so quickly,” Cross says, as we head through the tight S bend.

The Brembo brakes have the task of bringing the heavy 4x4 to a standstill, and during our time on-track they’re never found wanting, helpd by new brake fluid and improved carbon scoops for greater cooling. Meanwhile, the eight-speed auto box remains incredibly smooth, with Cross using every gear to its full extent. “This is one of the toughest corners of the track,” he tells us as we go through a long right-hander. “But it doesn’t feel like you’re in an SUV.”

The open-valve exhaust system – there partly for showing off with its boisterous noise and partly for added cooling – is thunderous from outside while being pleasantly encouraging from inside the car. Despite the added pace and brasher styling, the SVR retains the Sport’s composure. That’s largely down to some of the upgrades Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division has given the car, including stiffer springs and specifically tuned active roll control. These help ensure there’s little body pitch through even the tightest of corners.

Dave Warner, SVO project engineer, explains some of the other tweaks: “Such power requires extra cooling, which has seen the foglights moved from the lower-most grilles,” he says. “An extended rear spoiler improves downforce, too.” Inside, there are upgraded sports seats, while the rear is set out with two separate chairs for a more premium feel.

The Range Rover Sport SVR is not only about speed, though; we’re also given a preview of how it remains one of the best off-roaders around when tackling steep ascents and extreme undulations. We even wade through deep water, which the 4x4 handles with absolute ease.
