Jeep [Renders] 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL)

Jeep is an American automobile marque introduced in 1943 and now owned by multi-national corporation Stellantis. Since 1945, it has been headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, when Willys-Overland launched the first CJ or Civilian Jeep branded models. Prior to 1940 the term "jeep" had been used as U.S. Army slang for new recruits or vehicles, but the World War II "jeep" that went into production in 1941 specifically tied the name to this light military 4x4, arguably making them the oldest four-wheel drive mass-production vehicles now known as SUVs.

JL Wrangler Forums suggests the next-generation Wrangler will be restyled in an evolutionary way that maintains the off-roader's classic looks yet adds new features. The forum used intelligence from spy photos and leaked images to assemble renderings of the new Wrangler.

They show that the front end is still classically Jeep, but with modern updates. The LED headlights and turn signals revealed in FCA drawings are noticeable changes. An interesting touch is just behind the rear bumper, where there appears to be an air dam for aerodynamics. There's still a gap between it and the front fenders to keep the old-school look intact. The grille, windshield, and hood are also more raked for the sake of aerodynamics.

At the back, the lights follow the FCA drawings as well, though the reverse lights from those illustrations appear to be absent. The square taillights are also shown on the truck variant, along with the plastic fender flares of the SUV version. Spy photos of the Wrangler pickup have shown a streamlined box with integrated taillights akin to the Ram, but it's likely to be a placeholder until the final design is selected. The sides of both models also feature more squared-off details in the top and door handles, generally with beveled corners for a more modern look.

The top is where things get fuzzy. The new model might lose its removable top altogether, in favor of removable panels similar to the Jeep Renegade. JL Wrangler Forums illustrated how this could work in the above image. The roof can be removed in sections, and the rear-most windows can also be taken out. The overall effect is similar to that of a current Wrangler Unlimited. There is a potential drawback to this system, though. All of these hard panels will have to be left somewhere. And unlike the current model, this one wouldn't have a soft-top back-up when the weather turns. It's hard to say for sure if this design will make it to production. FCA has consistently and effectively hidden this part of its Wrangler prototypes since they were first spotted. At this point, we can only speculate on how the top will function.

Otherwise, these renderings seem plausible, and we should know how accurate they are when the Wrangler makes its expected debut next year. The new Wrangler will likely have some aluminum body panels, an 8-speed automatic and an available diesel powertrain. JL Wrangler Forums put together every detail we've heard about the new Wrangler and Wrangler Pickup into one styling exercise.

We've been hearing a ton of little details about the upcoming, all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler. It's going to have an aluminum-intensive body, available in two-door, four-door, and, finally, pickup truck styles. We've seen spy photos of heavily camouflaged test mules. And now, thanks to the folks at JL Wrangler Forum, we have a speculative rendering of what the final product will look like.

Like the 2020 Ford Bronco illustrations we debuted earlier this year, these 2018 Jeep Wrangler drawings aren't official Jeep illustrations. They're speculative sketches, penned by skilled and knowledgeable people who nonetheless aren't affiliated with Jeep in any way, and published here with JL Wrangler Forum's permission. But they synthesize all of the details we've heard about the new Wrangler's design into one coherent, convincing design. Let's take a closer look.

At first glance, this sketch looks very similar to the current-generation JK Wrangler that's been around since model year 2007. That's not a mistake: the Wrangler is one of the most successful vehicles in Fiat Chrysler's entire lineup, and Jeep likely doesn't want to mess with success by altering the styling too much.

But the details make the difference. Check out how the headlights jut into the outer-most grille openings, a tribute to the Wrangler's predecessor and inspiration, the CJ. The grille is no longer flat: the top portion leans back, a design element last seen on the TJ Wrangler (1997-2006). This, plus the more raked windshield, are likely intended to improve the Wrangler's aerodynamics. This rendering includes bumpers that reach up to close the gap with the front fenders, another aero trick previously only seen on European-market Wranglers. Front turn signals have moved from below the headlights to the leading edge of the front fenders.

At the rear, the JL Wrangler Forum renderings show a more raked, smoothed greenhouse. X-pattern taillights echo the jerry-can-inspired design currently seen on the Jeep Renegade.

The roof design has been a particularly important question with the new Wrangler. Rumors hold that Jeep will replace the current removable roof with a permanent roof structure featuring pop-off top and side panels. This would improve structural rigidity, improve crash safety, and potentially reduce weight by eliminating the separate roll bar structure currently used. The JL Wrangler Forum rendering shows how this removable-panel roof design could be incorporated into the four-door Wrangler Unlimited as well as the pickup truck, a design that coincides with renderings we've previously published.

We expect most of the hallmark features of the current Wrangler to stick around in the new model. Details like the exposed door hinges (allowing for Jeep's trademark removable doors), the tailgate-mounted full-size spare tire, and the overall shapes of the windows and door openings, all contribute to a design largely similar to the current Wrangler.

Under the hood, we expect an available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making as much as 300 horsepower, hooked up to either an eight-speed automatic or, praise heavens, a six-speed manual. That hood, interestingly, gave us a clue about how similar the styling would be: A current Wrangler inadvertently got what seems like a 2018 Wrangler prototype hood from an auto parts recycler that, when installed on a 2014 Wrangler, almost fit save for a two-inch overhang.

For a more in-depth explanation of the design decisions that went into these speculative, unofficial, but good-looking renderings, check out the post on JL Wrangler Forums. And for even more details on what we expect to see in the upcoming Jeep Wrangler, here's everything we know so far.

2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Spied During Offroad Drag Race Against Wrangler JK

The 2018 incarnation of the Jeep Wrangler is almost ready to be taken out of the oven and, as you can imagine, the spy material covering the Wrangler JL topic gets spicier by the day. Case in point with the piece of footage at the bottom of the page, which shows the next-gen Wrangler drag racing the outgoing model on dunes.

If this sounds familiar, it's probably because we showed you the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JLU doing its thing at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes last month. Nevertheless, while the action we saw in July was more fitting for the soft-roading label, the Michigan location saw the Jeeps engaging in proper offroading activities this time around.

Heck, it almost looks like the uphill challenge was staged - that's how big the rugged terrain performance gap between the two generations of the iconic offroader is.

Of course, tires are always the second most important component in such scenarios (the driver takes the #1 spot) and it seems that the 2018 test car seen here features Goodyear DuraTrac rubber. Nevertheless, the rumor mill talks about the production vehicle getting BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires.

You should also pay attention to the image gallery below, since we've added the recently leaked 2018 Jeep Wrangler specs at the end.

As we've discussed on previous occasions, the most important addition has to do with the introduction of a 3.0-liter V6 diesel and a reworked 2.72:1 Selec-Track Full Time 4WD system.

And while the two-door Sahara incarnation of the Wrangler will be put to sleep, there's plenty of good news to keep enthusiasts happy. For one thing, the gas side of the lineup will see the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 getting accompanied by a 2.0-liter Hurricane turbo-four.

The base models will involve a six-speed manual tranny, while an eight-speed auto is set to serve as a premium feature.

Oh, and let's not forget the all-new Rubicon's 33-inch tires, as well as the power soft top of the next-gen model.

Jeep is scheduled to take the wraps off the all-new JL and JLU in November, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Nevertheless, we could see an online reveal, which could be disguised as a leak, much sooner.

Spyshots: 2018 Jeep Wrangler JLU Drops Frontal Camo, Looks Familiar

With the launch of the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler just a matter of days now, it looks as though FCA decided it could allow itself to go easier than before on the camo for the off-roader because a four-door Unlimited model has just been spotted poking its head out of that infuriating pattern.

The only close look at the JL model we've had so far was that single picture from the assembly line, but if we're honest, it didn't reveal too much. With just the side of the wheel arch and the hinges on the door, you can't really make out the design of a vehicle.

On the other hand, the Wrangler - like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class - is one of those vehicles where exterior design is as surprising as getting shot while sitting in front of the targets on a busy day at a firing range. We pretty much know what's coming.

However, that doesn't mean it's not nice to see the 2018 model for the first time, even though it looks predictably similar to the outgoing one. We say "outgoing," but the recently leaked timeline shows the JK generation will carry on until next March, despite the new one starting production as soon as next month.

We'd say the designers did a fine job of retaining the rugged and utilitarian aspect that made Wrangler the legend it is while also infusing a sense of modernity into some of its details. A keen eye might spot the vents in the hood, the repositioning of the windshield hinges, the redesigned fender flares or the sleeker hood latches, but the idea is that everyone knows they're looking at a Jeep Wrangler.

The JLU in the pictures shows a bumper design similar to what we've seen on special editions and in Mopar catalogs, so it will either be standard for Rubicon models, or Jeep is already field testing its accessories. And judging by the amount of dried mud and dust on one of the cars, the drivers were on their way home from a pretty good day at work.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will make its full public debut on November 27 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, after the production would have already started. Various body styles and engines will be introduced gradually culminating with the Scrambler pickup truck a year from now. In the meantime, take your time and browse through the photo gallery to familiarize yourself with the 2018 Wrangler Unlimited

Next-Gen Jeep Wrangler To Get Hybrid Option

Jeep-Wrangler-Hybrid-2-.webp

A hybrid version of the next-generation Jeep Wrangler is apparently in the works.
spied testing on numerous occasions in the past year and Autocar reports that the firm is working on a fuel-efficient variant aided by electricity.

It is believed that the Jeep Wrangler hybrid will be the very first vehicle from the Jeep brand to be fitted with a hybrid powertrain, most likely consisting of a small electric motor and battery pack mated alongside a four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.

The automaker has been evaluating hybrid vehicles for a number of years now and actually created a plug-in hybrid study prototype in 2008.

At this stage, it isn’t known which markets will have the option of the hybrid. However, we do know that three engines will make up the initial family of models. They will include a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol, a 3.6-liter petrol V6 and a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel.

A debut later this year for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is predicted.

Let's hope the new two-door Wrangler looks this good.
Patience is a virtue, they say. But in the case of the upcoming Jeep Wrangler, our patience is nearly wearing thin. The upcoming off-roader has been teased, rendered, and spied heavily prior to its debut at the end of the year. The latest set of renderings preview the two-door Sport and Rubicon model – and they look handsome.

Though subtle, the exterior updates over the current generation are noticeable. The taillights gain an hourglass-shaped LED, the front grille is refreshed with an angled design, and both the front bumper fog lights and headlights feature bright white LEDs. Of course, this is still just a rendering, and we won’t know exactly what the final product looks like until its debut.

The new Jeep Wrangler is expected to make its debut later this year at the LA Auto Show, before going on sale early late in 2017 or early 2018. The two-door version pictured here could see a slight delay into mid-2018. Production of the new model will actually coincide alongside the current model for a few months before the 2017 model is discontinued entirely, with both the new Wrangler and the new Ram 1500 pickup reportedly sharing the same aluminum intensive platform.

The new Wrangler will be powered by two gas engines, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 horsepower (223 kilowatts), as well as a more powerful 3.6-liter V6, paired to either a six-speed manual or a new eight-speed automatic. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel option is also rumored, specifically on the Scrambler pickupmodel.

Like many Wranglers before it, thew new JL will also come with features like a three-piece removable roof, which will be available at launch, as well as some much-needed technological updates to the interior. The new Wrangler will be built at Jeep’s Toledo, Ohio production facility, which recently underwent a $700 million upgrade in preparation.

New Jeep Wrangler To Offer 368 HP, 2.0L Turbo

Jeep-Wrangler-Engines-6-.webp

A leaked document has revealed that the new-generation Jeep Wrangler will initially be offered with a 3.6-liter V6 and a 2.0-liter turbo four when it lands in U.S. dealers in December.
JL Wrangler Forums, the document was submitted by FCA to the NHTSA and confirms that the familiar Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 will deliver 285 hp. Despite being smaller in capacity, it is the 2.0-liter turbo four that will sit atop the range, pumping out an extremely healthy 368 hp.

Whereas the V6 of the new Wrangler will be essentially identical to the unit offered in the Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Journey, the 2.0-liter will be offered exclusively in the new Wrangler.

Additionally, the document states that the Wrangler will initially only be sold in four-door guise and offered as the Sport Unlimited, Sahara Unlimited and Rubicon Unlimited. While there is no mention of a two-door model, spy shots have confirmed that such a variant is being developed and is expected to debut shortly after the four-door.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will celebrate its public debut at the LA Auto Show.
