Volkswagen has been spotted testing a prototype for a redesigned Passat.

It's due out in 2023 and is expected to be offered exclusively in wagon form, which VW refers to as a Variant.

Don't look for the new Passat to reach the U.S. It wouldn't reach these shores even if it had a sedan option. That's because the Passat sold in the U.S., which bows out after 2022, uses a separate, less-expensive platform than Passats sold in the rest of the world.
The global Passat uses Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, and the redesigned model will use an updated version of this platform. The global Passat's corporate twin, the Skoda Superb, is also due to be redesigned shortly on the updated MQB platform. However, it is expected to be available in both sedan and wagon body styles.

You might be wondering why no sedan will be offered for the Passat. While the body style is on the decline in most markets, apart from China, VW will soon have a Passat sedan alternative in the form a production version of its ID.Aero concept car shown earlier this year. The electric sedan, which is tipped to go by the name ID.6, has also been spotted testing.
The ID.6 is also due in 2023, and is confirmed for U.S. sale. An ID.6 wagon is also planned and with any luck we'll also see this body style in local showrooms.
Production of the new Passat will take place at VW Group's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The powertrain lineup should consist of a series of inline-4s, including some in plug-in hybrid configuration. A redesigned Passat Alltrack soft-roader should also be coming.

I wonder how popular the Passat is outside of Germany. In the past it used to be a default choice if a Mercedes, Audi or BMW is too expensive. However, today there is a wide variety of cars that are more practical, more enjoyable to drive or better looking. I think think of a reason why I would buy a Passat over a practical Kia or Hyundai.

Still VW better than both

All I know is that the B5 Passat was quite a revelation when it came out with its rounded shape and 1.8 Turbo engine that provided good performance without the fuel consumption of a V6 and it was a runner-up for the 1998 Motor Trend Import Car of the Year Award, but the award went for the then new Lexus GS (S160).

Such a beta design, just like the Golf 8…

VW has designed their ID line well, but sabotaging their non-electric yet iconic models like the Passat and the Golf in this way is just bad.

I believe the way they are trying to link the front and rear lights with the LED bar looks cheap and stupid.

VW better gets some new design ideas for the Golf, Polo and Tiguan EVs. They really need them.

I watched this video this evening. Carplay looks insanely immersive in full screen on a 15 inch infotainment screen! View a CarPlay Home Screen on a laptop for reference. Icons are the size of oreos.

Ignoring the uninspiring interior, the new Passat seem to be a good car. With a wider and longer body the value proposition is not stronger: It matches the practicality of the Skoda Superb whilst offering a slightly more premium experience. All the features look fuss free and I like the space saver wheel and motorised parcel shelf cover.

With a 690L boot it’s a anti-SUV worth considering if you want a cavernous boot for dogs, camping, baby prams or a bike!

Passat brings a conundrum like BMW and its 3er. It’s also a heavily used Fleet vehicle. Essentially it’s fleets that keep Passat alive especially in Kombi format. Like the aforementioned BMW Tourings. You can find a Passat as a Government vehicle, emergency services, taxi’s, domestic companies such as Security and Alarm fitters. And Many other points of government and commercial industries use the Passat. The ID.7 will probably take place of The Passat. So although new? This new Passat may have a shorter lifecycle.

It also explains why the bodyshell is shared with the Superb now, instead of both being different
